It's not a "bug" and it's not even Kunena. The issue lies in the complexity that is known as the Joomla menuing system. You cannot have two menu items with the same alias name if you use Joomla SEO. It's as simple as that. One solution is to give each menu item a different menu alias; another solution is to correct the mistakes that people make when they try to create many different links to Kunena but use the same menu alias. It's a little difficult to explain but the topic is discussed in Customised menus . There is also a fix/workaround mentioned many times in this topic.

I also originally changed the alias and it did work for the original issue of the redirect error. Thought the issue was solved until I tried to open a topic.

Anyway, I dont recall (exactly) but upon install there was a menu item added automatically - "forum". I thought it was great that I didnt have to take the extra step but it seems to be the problem lies here. Like I said Im not complaining but it seems like many others are having the same issues. Sorry for calling it a bug Im not an expert...but it is a problem and I hope you guys can find a solution or at least offer an easy solution that is easy to find for your users... Just my advice. You guys do create amazing work and I would never complain but when I created this website the first thing that came to mind was J! and Kunena because in the past you guys have never let me down nor have I ever had any problems what-so-ever with your component - Just install it and it works. Anyway the key for now IMO would be to explain the problem with SEO upfront perhaps on the download page at least you might not have to spend so much time explaining over and over to noobs like me in this topic! :) Thanks! Thanks again! I would not even be here offering my petty advice if I didnt love your software so much, I very rarely do this sort of thing...

This is partly true. On the one hand, when K 1.6 was still in the early stages of development (and J! 1.6 was also in alpha testing) it was considered to be a good idea to create a menu link to Kunena to save people the trouble of working with the complicated Joomla menu system.

J! 1.6.0 was released on 10-Jan this year and K! 1.6.3 was released on 31-Jan this year. People very quickly discovered that this automatic menu creation idea did not play nicely with J! 1.6

But it's not just because of J! 1.6 that the automatic menu creation idea needed to be reviewed. It's because many people wanted their own link to Kunena and they had not fully appreciated the implications of how to go about the task; the information exists, by the way, in Customised Menus . It's because people have created their own Kunena menu item, without removing the automatically-generated one, that they run into browser redirection issues.

Accordingly, starting with K 1.6.4, the Kunena installer will continue to try to automatically create a menu item for the site but this item will not be published. This means that most people - those who are upgrading from an older version of K 1.6.x and who have already sorted out their menus - will not encounter these browser redirection issues in future. However for those who have created a new site built with K 1.6.4, people will have to enable the automatically-created menu item or add their own. This will cause a few other minor headaches but, we feel, those headaches will be less painful than having a browser redirection nightmare.

Too many responses for me to read them all, but mine was fixed by setting SEO to NO on the Kunena configuration page, allowing Joomla's core SEF to do the redirecting. Worked like a champ after that.
