Kunena 3.0.0 Beta 1 Released

Details
Published: 04 April 2013

Important Update: Kunena 3.0.0. beta 3

The Kunena team has released K 3.0.0b3 for Joomla 2.5, Joomla 3.0 and Joomla 3.l. This is the third public beta release for Kunena 3.0. Please read the K 3.0.0b3 release notes for important details about this release.

Important Update: Kunena 3.0.0. beta 2

The Kunena team has released K 3.0.0b2 for Joomla 2.5, Joomla 3.0 and Joomla 3.l. This is the second public beta release for Kunena 3.0. Please read the K 3.0.0b2 release notes for important details about this release.

Introduction

The Kunena team is thrilled to announce the first public beta release of Kunena 3.0, a native Joomla extension for J! 2.5 and J! 3.0. This is a development release and should be only be used for testing; this version is not recommended for live websites at this stage.

Kunena 3.0 is a project that has been over eight months in the making. Among other things, the main design objectives for Kunena 3.0 were to remove many lingering legacy issues (caused by the requirement in older versions to maintain J! 1.5 websites) as well as to keep pace with current and emerging Joomla trends.

The purpose of this release is to encourage testing by downloading, installing and identifying any problems or shortcomings that people may discover. K 3.0.0 B1 is not yet stable and we are aware that people will discover software defects. We encourage you to use the forum to report defects, as soon as they are discovered, so that the development team can work through the problems before the release of K 3.0 as a stable product. Reporting defects does not mean that the problems can or will be fixed. The Kunena team is looking forward to hearing your feedback on how well we have achieved our design goals.

Key elements of K 3.0 are:

  • Major rewrite of the K 2.0 codebase:
    • Added support for J! 3.x
    • Removal of old J! 1.x code
  • Improved installation/upgrade procedure
  • New Bootstrap-driven backend for J! 2.5 and J! 3.x

I can't understand how set integration with CB. In K.2.0 I remember that I could choose the community integration such CB, now I don't see the option to choose the community system.

Is not yet implemented? Is auto-choosing?

Thanks

Kunena 2.0.4 Security Release

Details
Published: 18 January 2013

The Kunena team has now released Kunena 2.0.4 for J! 1.5 and J! 2.5. K 2.0.4 is a security and maintenance release for Kunena that addresses over 30 issues that were reported since the last version release. The Kunena team recommends this updated version as a replacement for any earlier version of Kunena.

Details about K 2.0.4 are contained in the Kunena 2.0.4 release notes. Although K 2.0.4 is only a minor/dot-point release, there are changes in behaviour between this version and the previous release (K 2.0.3); it essential that people read the release notes before upgrading to better prepare for changes to the way that Kunena now works.

As a security response against possible XSS attacks, K 2.0.4 makes all previous versions of Kunena obsolete and no longer supported by the team. We encourage all users to upgrade to this new version as soon as possible to avoid the possibility that your forum's operations may be compromised as a result of this issue. Questions regarding older versions of Kunena will not be answered on the forum.

With the release of K 2.0.4 out of the way, the Kunena team will now be able to focus attention on the development of K 3.0. The essential differences between K 3.0 and K 2.0 are

  1. K 3.0 will not support J! 1.5
  2. K 3.0 will support J! 2.5 and J! 3.0

K 2.0.4 Highlights

  • Two potential XSS vulnerabilities have been detected and changes have been made to address these.
  • Changes that affect forum announcements
  • General improvements to forum administration (backend) features
  • Fixes to many reported problems with Kunena menu types that failed to work since the introduction of K 2.0
  • Resolution of problems using the Trash Manager
  • Changed behaviour: Changed behaviour: Guests are able to view results of polls (although they are not permitted to vote); logged-in users (who have not yet voted) will not be able to see the results of the poll until after they have voted. The team is aware that this changed behaviour may influence voting patterns; the changed behaviour is an unfortunate side-effect of correcting other poll-related problems.
  • Remediation of "message preview" issues
  • Remediation of K 2.0.3 known issues

Kunena 2.0.4 is available for download at http://www.kunena.org/download.

The future of K 2.0

With the release of K 2.0.4 completed, and with the team now focusing on K 3.0, we would expect that this version will be the last in the K 2.0 series. This means that K 2.0.4 will be the only version supported (by the team) as far as J! 1.5 is concerned, but only to the extent of providing essential hotfixes. It is unlikely that a new version of K 2.0 will be released after this time.

What this means for those who have J! 1.5 websites is that they will be stuck with K 2.0 and people will not be able to take advantage of enhancements, features or bugfixes that may occur in future. What this means for those who have J! 1.5 is that, at some stage after the release of K 3.0, K 2.0 will no longer be supported by the team. This should signal J! 1.5 site operators to consider their strategic position as to how they will proceed from now. While there is no urgency at this time for people to upgrade from a website that they currently have no problems with, this does not mean that people should necessarily become complacent either. These are matters for each J! 1.5 site owner to consider for themselves.

The future of Kunena is tied to the future of Joomla. With J! 3.0 soon to be used more widely, the team is making efforts to respond to the ongoing challenges of ensuring that Kunena meets the growing demand for the "latest and greatest".

yuri1982: this is not the topic to ask these kinds if questions. You have asked the sane questions in several other places on our forum. It is incorrect to say that "noting works". K 2.0.4 has been downloaded several thousand times. If it dud not work then you would not be the only person making your voice heard.

The reason why, in your case, some things are not working is because you have not properly published your Kunena menu and because you have installed some Joomla extension that clobbers Joomla Mootools. See msg #1 of www.kunena.org/forum/K-2-0-General-Quest...tion-read-this-first

Thank you.

We are having some administration issues with the "automatic update" system. We're working on fixing this problem; it may be fixed in a few hours, days or weeks. I do not have any information about when the automatic release system information will be changed.

In the meantime I would leave people with the following words of wisdom: "There are three kinds of people in the world: those who make things happen, those who let things happen and those who wonder what happened."

It takes very little time to read the release notes for K 2.0.4 and to update to K 2.0.4. If people continue to wait for the automatic update to occur, that's their choice. It's also our decision not to respond to questions where people continue to use outdated versions of Kunena that are no longer being looked after by anyone.

As with all new releases of Kunena, the auto update is not enabled for the first 24-48 hours after the release. This is to encourage early adoption by members of the community who require urgent fixes for various issues/problems that they may be having. In good time, the "autoupdate" information will be propagated throughout the internet.

In the meantime, upgrading to Kunena using the usual Joomla method is easy and will take most people around 30 seconds to do the job. Even if people rely on the "autoupdate" method, people should still read carefully the release notes before committing the update.

For those of you who continue to ask "when will the autoupdate become available?" our standard response to this question is "Usually within 24-48 hours after a new version released is announced."

I hope this helps. :)

Thanks, too, Shimei for all your help. K 2.0.4 will remain a supported version for a couple of months longer but there will not be any changes or enhancements made to this last release in the K 2.0 series ... unless there are important changes required from a security point-of-view. :)

Thanks a bunch Kunena team!

Upgraded from 2.03 to 2.04 without a hiccup. Applied some little hacks (mainly SEO) and changed some things in the default blue eagle template. After making these changes I made my way to the trash manager and... hooray! It works flawlessly!

Sorry to see this site go, that is, with my Joomla! 1.5.26 site and Kunena 2.04 -- my site is finally complete. This combination will now allow me to concentrate on data entry. I write this because more than likely this will be my departing post. I have no foreseeable reason to upgrade Joomla! to version 2, or 3, and therefore will not be keeping up with the Joneses (my Joomla! neighbors).

With no errors/bugs to report -- I hope that this is my last post here!

Thanks Team!

Kunena 2.0.3 Security Release

Details
Published: 24 November 2012

The Kunena team has now released Kunena 2.0.3 for J! 1.5 and J! 2.5. K 2.0.3 is a security and maintenance release for Kunena that addresses over 75 issues that were reported since the last version release. The Kunena team recommends this updated version as a replacement for any earlier version of Kunena.

Details about K 2.0.3 are contained in the Kunena 2.0.3 release notes.  Although K 2.0.3 is only a minor dot-point release, there are enough changes in behaviour between this version and the previous release (K 2.0.2) that make it essential for people to read the release notes before upgrading.  Reading the release notes will better prepare you for changes to the way Kunena now works.

As a security response against possible XSS attacks, K 2.0.3 makes all previous versions of Kunena obsolete and no longer supported by the team. We encourage all users to upgrade to this new version as soon as possible to avoid the possibility that your forum's operations may be compromised as a result of this issue.

With the release of K 2.0.3 out of the way, the Kunena team will now be able to focus attention on the development of K 3.0.  The essential differences between K 3.0 and K 2.0 are

  1. K 3.0 will not support J! 1.5
  2. K 3.0 will support J! 2.5 and J! 3.0

K 2.0.3 Highlights

  • A potential XSS vulnerability has been detected and changes have been made to address this matter.
  • Changes to improve compatibility with J! 2.5, PHP, HTML and CSS (including the interoperability with some third-party plugins that may be used with Kunena).
  • Changes to improve compatibility with RSS feeds and other fixes relating to RSS content filtering
  • Fixes to many reported problems with Kunena menu types that failed to work since the introduction of K 2.0
  • Changed behaviour: Moderators can now delete unapproved topics and posts
  • Changed behaviour: Users no longer have the option to change their votes in polls. This feature (introduced in K 1.7) has caused numerous problems and, for sake of continued reliability, it was decided that this option should be removed from the component.
  • Changed behaviour: Guests can now see if attachments exist. This change sets K 2.0 behaviour to the way the forum behaved in K 1.7)
  • Changed behaviour: Added confirmation dialog to Restore Default Settings
  • Improved security and operation in connection with Kunena Announcements
  • Remediation of Last post date "42 years ago" - access denied to topic - database errors

Kunena 2.0.3 is available for download at http://www.kunena.org/download.

The future of K 2.0

Kunena 2.0.2 Released

Details
Published: 02 September 2012

The Kunena Project is pleased to announce the maintenance release of Kunena 2.0.2. This is a native Joomla extension compatible with versions 1.5.x and 2.5.x. All users are encouraged to upgrade.

This release includes a number of fixes, including compatibility with content plug-ins, issues with attachments, and a category manager ordering issue. There are also a number of small new features that allow posters to change topic icons during reply and the option to disable IP tracking.

Please refer to the Kunena 2.0.2 release notes - you should should also read the important information contained in the release notes for Kunena 2.0 if you are upgrading from a version earlier than 2.0.  You can read more about Kunena 2.0 here.

We also want to remind the community that, in keeping with plans previously announced in the Kunena project roadmap for 2012, support for K 1.7 ceased on 31 August and the forum no longer is the place to discuss issues or problems related to that version.  Also, as part of the project's ongoing activities to place the forum on a more financially self-sustaining footing, members of the forum to give a greater emphasis on the essential self-help nature of Kunena. We hope that members of the community will find this new approach will better target the kinds of questions or ideas they may want to share with the community.

The forum is now divided into 6 sections:

  1. Official Announcements and News about Kunena: This section carries important information about upcoming releases and future plans. We strongly encourage all members of the community to subscribe to this category.
  2. Community self help: This is a collection of the general and "how to" questions about the actively supported version(s) of Kunena, questions about installation, customising, and many other matters that users may want to share with the community that may, or may not, come under the direct control of the Kunena project team.
  3. The Kunena Project: This section is about how the Kunena project can make things better for everyone. We hope, too, that people will continue to bring to our attention genuinely serious problems that may affect others who use Kunena on their websites. This is why we are moving our "support" service more to a "defect reporting and resolution centre". In the past, many people may have felt that "free support" for their unique problems was an unlimited commodity; that has never been the case and we felt it was necessary to make the distinction clearer. We do understand that some people have genuine issues that affect only them and no-one else and we will do our best, in a community-driven, self-help forum context to provide advice as best we can. We hope to be able to announce new services that will better help users who have specific and unique issues.
  4. Kunena in other languages
  5. Community feedback: This is where we encourage you to give us your thoughts about the product, the website, and new ideas for improvements to Kunena
  6. Archive

Kunena 2.0.2 is available for download at http://www.kunena.org/download.

Thanks for the new update!

Did you forgot to mention that the emoticons folder will be changed? I've updated from Kunena 2.0.1 to 2.0.2
The emoticons are now stored in the media folder, before they were stored in the templates folder?

Just saying because it cost me a little time to find out ;)
