Kunena Turns 2!

Details
Published: 29 January 2011

Kunena's Second Birthday

Its an exciting week here in the Kunena community and especially for me, Oliver (aka fxstein). Two years ago, we published Kunena for the very first time. We recognize two important dates: January 27, 2009, when we uploaded Kunena 1.0.7 to this website, and February 2, 2009, when Kunena was first published on the Joomla Extension Directory. In the days that followed, the site went from no traffic to bustling with excitement. Matias and I were caught by surprise since we did not think Kunena would catch on so quickly. We had no idea that what was about to come would overshadow anything that had come before.

In 2007, I discovered Fireboard (the predecessor of Kunena) and used it for a while on my personal website, which included doing my fair share of private bug fixes. When it became clear that keeping my own fixes was not so easy when each new release came out, I had no choice but to join their development team in 2008 and started cranking away on bugs — literally hundreds of them. For a couple of months, I fixed and improved a lot of things. The prior development team was no longer engaged in the project and help from other community members was initially rather slow. So for six months, I did bug fixes and nobody released anything. Eventually, it became pretty clear to me that the Fireboard project was beyond salvageable and the prior leadership team ultimately turned off the forums on their site. It was a turning point and a few weeks later, we decided to open Kunena.com and release a long awaited bug fix release labeled Kunena 1.0.7.

Ya, also been there from the very beginning, even before fire board. Kunena is absolutely brilliant and absolutely nothing would persuade me to use anything else now.

One question, if you are able to answer this. What is the long-term goal with kunena? Where exactly do you want to end up? Will it ever be possible to have a forum that functions in the same way as other forum such as invasion board etc?

Kunena 1.6.2 Released!

Details
Published: 29 December 2010

Introduction

The Kunena Team is excited to announce the release of Kunena 1.6.2. This is a maintenance release for Kunena 1.6 and all users are recommended to upgrade to Kunena 1.6.2 (backup and testing are strongly recommended!).

Since the stable release of Kunena 1.6, the Kunena team has been focused on fixing over 100 bugs; including fixing issues with CSS, router, API, HTML validation, and usability. Official Kunena modules and plug-ins have been updated as well as language translations.

Kunena 1.6 marks a major milestone for the Kunena Project. A long list of open source contributors have committed over 3,000 changes helping make Kunena the leading forum solution for both Joomla 1.5 and 1.6. A long list of new features, various optimizations, and code restructuring have resulted in the most advanced version of Kunena to date.

We continue to put a big emphasis on usability and ease of installation. The installer has been further enhanced to allow for multiple installation and upgrade options. It performs incremental steps to avoid timeouts on slower hosts. It automatically performs actions such as taking the forum offline during the installation or upgrade and re-enables it after completing the install.

Kunena now supports Joomla 1.6 style languages files that are backward compatible with Joomla 1.5. Multiple languages are included in the base install packages and more will be available soon. They can also be installed separately. Kunena 1.6 support multiple languages installed on a single system and, together with Joomla, allows users to select their preferred language.

Templates have now been separated from the underlying code, which allows for version-independent template development. Templates can embed various options that can be set via the included template manager (e.g. avatar position on left, right, top, or bottom in the new default template, Blue Eagle).

The Kunena Team is fully committed to Joomla 1.6 and beyond and a number of modules have been developed to lay the groundwork for future releases of Joomla.

kenfreed: Please do not use this general topic to ask questions about problems that you are having. This topic "Kunena 1.6.2 Released!" is for people to comment on the article that appears on the front page of this website.

If your problem concerns K 1.5.9 there is no support for that version. K 1.5.9 was released over 12 months ago and has long been superseded.

If you have a problem with K 1.6.2 then please search the forum for the error message that you are getting to see if there is any advice about such things. If your problem is a new problem then please start a new discussion topic in one of the support categories. Please look at the sticky topics in the support categories for guidance on how you should go about asking your questions and what information you should provide when you do so.

Thank you for your co-operation. On behalf of the team, welcome to Kunena.

I installed version 1.5.9 into Joomla and it's working well - but there's one error on the front end page that displays the Kunena forum:

Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is deprecated in D:\wamp\www\joomla\components\com_kunena\kunena.php on line 698

Other than this - it seems to be working OK.

On my earlier post: I imagine v1.6.2 is for Joomla 1.6??? (since it did not install into Joomla 1.5.21). If so, it would be helpful if this were clearer on the download page. And if not - the Kunena people have a bug. 1.6.2 will not install into Joomla 1.5.21

I went to www.kunena.org/download , selected the 1.6.2 Installer/Updater, and downloaded com_kunena_v1.6.2_b3894_2010-12-29.zip. Then I went to Extensions->Install/Uninstall on the Joomla back end and browsed to the zip file and hit "Upload File & Install" (like usual). I got a big pink/red error stating "There was an error uploading this file to the server". Below it was the message "unable to find install package".

- Any advice? I'm running Joomla 1.5.21.

Read the first post again:

Be sure your setup meets or exceeds the minimum Technical Requirements or the install/upgrade process will fail. If it fails, your data will be left untouched.

You will found System Requirements also in here: docs.kunena.org/index.php/Kunena_1.6.2_R...#System_Requirements

Because you said that you are very new to Joomla! I think you wrote wrong Joomla! version number (maybe right is 1.5.20 or 1.5.22)?

yes, you can.
first install component Joomla! Update Manager .
let that tool do the work to update to J! 1.5.22.
it's free and you'll be on the safe side.
Then update to Kunena 1.6.2. but take care abt special, and/or modified template settings etc in your 'old' version.
Follow the threads on this forum.

K1.6.2 has not a lot of improvements, it's mainly a maintenance release which fix plenty of issues. K2.0 is still in working in progress, so we need to release something with k1.6.x untill k2.0 isn't ready.

This is not a topic to seek help. If you want help please use one of the help categories. When asking for help, it will help you if you give some details about your Kunena configuration (your K 1.6 configuration report will do this for you). Users can delete their own posts in K 1.6 according to the rules as you define them in your Kunena configuration settings. It is highly unlikely your present circumstances are a "bug". K 1.6.2 (when it is made available to the public) is unlikely to make any difference to what's happening at your site. On the other hand, you may have genuinely discovered a software defect.

By default, users cannot delete their own messages. You can change that behaviour by changing the third Kunena Forum Configuration » Security setting. Have you tried this feature?

I know nothing about www.globalfreeenterprise.com or who they are or what they do. www.globalfreeenterprise.com is not endorsed as an approved source of Kunena.

I got some help installing Kunena into my joomla site at

www.globalfreeenterprise.com

I have, through the administrator site, allowed registered users to delete their own posts.

I have version 1.6.0 and it does not allow registered users to delete their own posts. I was told by the organization that installed joomla and Kunena for me that an older version does in fact work on this dimension and that if I had the older version installed, this feature would work, but my template would need to be changed.

I was also told that version 1.6.2 is about to be released. Is this true? Does anybody know if the bug preventing this feature (the ability to delete one's own posts) is fixed in version 1.6.2?

Thank you for your help.

Nope - 41.41k is 41,410 views.

Why are we shortening the numbers? Because they can get way too long to fit into the template - that would break the page layout.

Many small forums never reach numbers that high and will never see that feature. But some of our forums have Millions of posts and 10s of millions of views.

With this logic (which is part of the template - we just provide the function underneath) designers can leverage the space on the screen much better. 10,000 becomes 10.00k, 100,000 becomes 100.0k, 10,000,000 becomes 10.00M and so on. It is always using 4 significant digits to display the number.
In the end we are talking about topic views - not a number that anybody really needs to see all of it, as it changes from second to second.

Hope this helps!
