G'day, Howard, and thank you very much for your really good question. :)

I know nothing about DocMan, what it's used for nor if it might crash K 1.6 but there's a very simple solution to the problem: you need to find out.

K 1.6 is here to stay. You can be assured that the design of K 1.6 will not be changed to accommodate J! 1.0 legacy software ... whatever it is. If J! 1.0 legacy software still works after you've installed K 1.6 then that's a good outcome for you; if Kunena crashes because of J! 1.0 legacy software then you'll have to make a decision: J! 1.0 legacy software or K 1.6.

Legacy mode does not, itself, cause problems for K 1.6 (as far as I know); it's the "things" that need "legacy mode". In case people are still a little confused, if you are trying to use software designed for J! 1.0 there's an 85% probability that you can run that software in J! 1.5 using "legacy mode". There's a zero-percent chance that you will be able to run that same software in J! 1.6. There is a genuine risk that some software that was developed for J! 1.0 will not co-operate with K 1.6. There are also genuine risks that some other software - software developed for J! 1.5 - will not co-operate with K 1.6, either! B)

K 1.6 was developed with the intention of being used with either J! 1.5 or J! 1.6 and work is continuing towards this goal. Future versions of Kunena will be developed with future versions of Joomla in mind and there will come the when some future version of Kunena will not run on today's Joomla (just like K 1.5 cannot operate in J! 1.0).

I would advise people to make the most of this opportunity to review their dependence on J! 1.5 legacy mode and their need for J! 1.0 software. If people are concerned about this then they should take action to lessen those concerns. You should have a test site (and, if not, you should create a test site) that reproduces the exact, same conditions as in your production site. You should use this test site to install K 1.6 to establish if K 1.6 is right for you. Even though there may be problems with some features of K 1.6 RC1, people should not be holding out for a "finished product" as a way of addressing major strategic issues such as replacing other key components on your website that just won't work with Kunena no matter how hard you try or how long you are prepared to wait for someone to "fix" them.

So, while I don't know what you might have to do about DocMan, specifically, as far as K 1.6 is concerned I can only advise you to find out soon for your peace of mind. :)
