Thanks sozzled. It's only because I think that Kunena is the right forum software for my site (we have been running vBulletin for four years) that I am persevering with this.

I will let you know how I get on.

If quick Reply or other Javascript is not working, there is almost always a JQuery conflict between Kunena and another component/module/plugin. This conflict cannot be avoided in Joomla! as it does not currently provide any way to check this kind of conflicts. Some components have made their own workaround for this by standardizing JQuery detection, so it does not get loaded two times. Unfortunately not all developers know this -- which causes a lot of issues.

Because of this Kunena 1.6 will use Mootools 1.2 instead. It will be (hopefully) included to the next J1.5 release. It should remove all conflicts, but may cause some issues with components still using old Mootools (we hope it go away after components have upgraded).

In the mean time only solution is to find out what module/plugin is doing this and add a small hack into it..

After discussing this with Matias, we've come to another conclusion about the "mysterious vanishing new post indicator syndrome" - the VNPIS I will call it from now on.

DAmsella's symptom can be reproduced as follows (and on other websites where this VNPIS occurs): Login to website and go to Kunena forum. In Damsella's case, this opened the "Categories" view. Observe that there are New! indicators on one or more topics. Reload the browser (CTRL-F5 to force a clean copy, not use the cache contents). "New!" indicator disappears.

According to Matias, he believes this is a session issue. It would help to know what value was set in the Kunena configuration setting, thus
  • Kunena Configuration » Basics » Session Lifetime = ???
The default value is 1800.

It is possible, in Damsella's case, that this was not the case (the setting may have been changed) and it would help to know what value was used.

The explanatory text accompanying this setting states: "Default is 1800 [seconds]. Session lifetime (timeout) in seconds similar to Joomla session lifetime. The session lifetime is important for access rights recalculation, whoisonline display and NEW indicator. Once a session expires beyond that timeout, access rights and the NEW indicator are reset."

It's funny you should have posted that sozzled, because I was looking behind the scenes and noticed that for some reason the Session Lifetime had been set to 0.

And guess what - THAT'S FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!! :woohoo: :silly:  B)

Such a stupid, obvious thing now we've sorted it.

So, now I have my Quick Reply fixed, and the New! function, which is fantastic. And hopefully nobody else will ever have to go through this!

Matias, that's great that 1.6 will avoid the Jquery conflict. Now I can start reloading components and see which one uses JB Library.

That was, in fact, what Matias suspected when he and I discussed your problem all those hours ago! ;)

I have also PMed oscarfishlover and katiepeters to inform them of these latest developments.

So what do you think is the longest I can set a Session Lifetime for? I think I must have put it to 0 thinking that would disable it. A lot of my users stay on the site on and off all day long, and don't want to have to log in every couple of hours or so.

Ideally, I would like a session lifetime to be 24 hours. Or "forever". Is that possible?
