This is what I would do - it's not 100% bullet-proof, but it might provide you with some clues:

Go to Extensions » Install / Uninstall

You will see that 6 sub-functions you can choose from:
  • Install
  • Components
  • Modules
  • Plugins
  • Languages
  • Templates
Click, one by one, each of the items I've bolded above. Browse the listed items and look for any items that have a red X in the compatibility column. For example, see the following image (the red X is shown against the ObjectClarity Kunena Discussbot plugin):

If you find any items like these, disable them. See if that makes a difference. :)

None of the above information is needed.

What I need is to know what is not working if you turn off legacy support. Is it only Kunena or are all pages broken?

Checklist:
* Do you use custom Kunena template? If you do, try to use default_ex instead
* Do you use another language than English in Kunena? If so, read instructions below..
* Do you have Disscussbot or some other Kunena related module installed? Try to disable them all and put them back one by one
* Disable SEF, it may be your SEF plugin

In your Language file, please check that you find these lines (just below copyright info):
// Dont allow direct linking
defined( '_JEXEC' ) or defined ('_VALID_MOS') or die('Restricted access');

If none of these helps and if the problem can be seen outside Kunena forums, the problem is most likely in somewhere else. Maybe it's your Joomla template or some other plugin/module you have installed.

Ok

It only affects Kunena

I did have a custome template but I reverted back to the default_ex and still no luck

No only english is used.

Discussbot not installed

SEF has been disabled and has no affect, still have the direct access error

Yes those lines are in the language file

I will try a default Joomla template again and see what happens.

Cheers

EDIT: I just tried a fresh install of the new 1.5.4 but still the same result...
EDIT2: I tried the default puriyt Joomla template but no difference.... I cannot access Kunena in front end or backend with Legacy off - if I turn it on then it works....
EDIT3: I turned off all non default plugins and still no luck
EDIT4: Found the language file and it has those two lines
