This is an interesting idea.

I agree with GM and Lintzy that users could abuse the feature in a "hit and run" manner: they post a message, people reply to it and then they delete their original message and everyone else is left staring at the train wreck.

Alternatively, a user might want to undo a mistake they made if they posted a message in error and want it removed before it causes them "embarrassment". Perhaps, instead of deleting all evidence that they made a contribution the user could have a "delete post" button that merely replaced the contents of the message with "User has deleted this post". That would probably work, too.

I think that users should be able to delete their post IF they just posted it and nobody has replied to it. So for example say in 10 minutes (configurable) they will be able to fix their mistake, but only if nobody has replied to it.

This setting should be configurable for every forum: for market forums (buy/sell) it might be sometimes useful to delete post even later..

I've just implemented hack to do that in my own forum. But I need to turn it into a feature before it will be included into a release. :)

In the mean time it's possible to do this, but it's not that easy. Still interested?

Yes.. always interested :)
but the problem about deleting the first post is a good one.. think it's avisable to NOT allow deleting a first post when someone already reacted on this post.
but deleting a followup could be handy

I can't see that there is a need for deleting post as long as users can edit their own post to avoid "embarrassment".

In the case mention by Matias (buying and selling)it may be useful, but marking a thread as [sold] will also do, and anyway there are components designed for selling and buying purposes...

Someone has come up with an idea on how to do this: HOW TO: Allow users to delete their own forum posts! . I still believe that the management issues we discussed months ago are still relevant today.
