I too think this would be a nice-to-have.
Of course it shouldn't be possible anymore to delete a post once there have been replies. That would ruin the whole context.
I'd certainly activate that feature if it was available, but I don't think it's worth the code changes bearing in mind the hassle of a forum update later.

IMHO: Deleting a post should be possible
1) if nobody has replied into it
2) but only during edit time
Will do this for K1.6

The purpose of forums can be really diverse.
In my oppinion, both features should be extensible configurable for admins to administer.
That way the forum application will support as many people / purposes possible.
We have had this talk a lot at my work, because this tiny feature heavily influences the way people react to a discussionboard in terms of ownership of content. It is simply of psychological importance.
Yes, the board Im working on, is not a typical board, but we have around 1500 postings a day.
For us, our users needs to feel in control of their content for the board to work (many oppinions, very nuanced discussions and a little 'off the edge' oppinions (because they can always delete their postings)).
You might argue, that this can ruin a discussion.
Yes, that is very true. But that is not necessarily the way things will end. That depends on your users and the kind of board you have (eg. political boards may not want users to delete own posts).
But if you dont have the option, you can never use it.
Therefore, in my (or the perfect) world, there is no excuse NOT to implement advanced features for admins. It all depends on the board itself.
I think, that these options would be sufficient for any administrator, to help set the way their forum need to be/react:
Allow users to delete posts:
- 'yes',
- 'yes - if no replies is made',
- 'yes - if no replies is made but only within xxx minutes',
- 'yes - within xxx minutes',
- 'no'
Keep subject, author & time (empty posts) when users delete own posts (allowing a threaded discussion to continue)?
- 'yes',
- 'no'
If moderators delete postings, remove it completely or empty it:
- 'remove',
- 'empty',
- 'let moderators choose themselves'
Allow users to edit posts:
- 'yes - if no replies is made',
- 'yes - if no replies is made but only within xxx minutes',
- 'yes - within xxx minutes',
- 'no'
Insert 'edit notice' if users edits posts:
- 'yes',
- 'no'
It sounds like an awfull lot, but it really isnt.
How does that sound?
(Edit: sorry for the long post
)
Best regards

I think user can delete their topic if no replies is made is a great idea.
