Good points, Randal, particularly about the need to disengage Kunena from defect-ridden Fireboard. This is the principle that is guiding the Kunena development team.
Without going into specifics about K 1.6 - mainly because I haven't gone into them myself  - K 1.6 will be a total overhaul of the way that forum templates have been developed in the past. I haven't, for example, examined whether Kunena 1.6 will continue to rely on tables (as it has done in the past) or will be tabless. There is so much about K 1.6 (see my " 'blog ") that it's impossible for me to cover every aspect of the new version.

Currently K1.6 default template is using tables, but we have tried to get rid of many of them. I do not believe that we even want to go totally tableless layouts in K1.6 as we want to get it out sooner than later. Tableless layouts have so many issues that can be solved only by faking tables (including some IE8 bugs) that I do not find it useful to use months of our time trying to fix something that already works.
What comes to templates: we have made removed most code and had huge simplifications in them to make them easy to change. With decent CSS skills it should be possible to make tableless layout and not worry if code below changes. Actually we hope that someone takes the task, so that K2.0 could have the feature.

Thank you for answers.
sozzled I read every small information about K 1.6 so every word in your blog I've seen about three times
So please go on with spread this news.
Matias thank you for answer. I understand that too many changes now, may be to difficult to overrun. So thanks for clarification topic of tableless. I trust you as a developers make a good decision to leave some tables to time when we can build it carefully.
I know that arrive time J! 1.6 beta and K 1.6 beta is unknown. But from today I want to know approximate time of release. How long you think we need to wait? 1 month or 3 month to get it for serious work?
I ask because I spend a lot of time with designing templates for K 1.5 and I don't waste my time and effort if K 1.6 is around the corner. And tempates from kunena 1.5 will be useless. You annouced us new template (engine) to work with. So when we can start design on it? Other words do I concentrate on K 1.5 now becouse K 1.6 need ....m.o.n.t.h.s... to get ready?
And most important think is THANK YOU! No doubt all Kunena community are very thankful and impressed what Kunena team do for all of us!
PS. see one of my template with drop some tables.
Category list and topics list for shure can be easier to design without tables.

If you want to get access to current K1.6 builds, just drop me a note and I will add you to testers list (PM me). But that's a trade: I assume that you will give feedback on it -- bug reposts and ideas/code how to improve it.
Estimations on public release is hard to give, as it depends on how much time each of us has and how much help we get from our community. We are already starting to stabilize, so that's good news. I need K1.6 by myself, so I really hope that we do not have to wait months for stable release.

I want to help but, sory I'm not programmer. I don't trust any code witch is not from your hands
Even most of kunena community. As always try to add my modifications on latest stable (1.5.10) default_ex and every time this is like working from beginning to make it sure I do not miss some latest fixes. So thank you but truly I think testing work at this stage is for more advanced (in code) users. Not for designer/administrator like me.
Right?
So I will be waiting patiently.
Oh. Do you can make even a simple documentation about new template engine to recognize new elements and hierarchy? If someone find time for this.
