Question lost avatars after "Synchronise Users" tool

Yes that works if I make this change then the Avatars will continue to exist.
Tested this on a live site and also on a local site

First of all: Thanks a lot for diving into this!

I lost the avatars when I ran the tool on a live site.
If I re-run the tool with the new file (the one from Github) will it retrospectively repair the avatars?

Just trying to avoid running into more troubles..

I can't test it because I don't get this error, but go to /administrator/components/com_kunena/controllers/ and copy as backup the tools.php Afterwards remove the lines 341 - 361 then refresh your forum.

Unfortunately that did not work

I tried both without and with this option checked:
 

The only thing that changed is that it now seems that the component and module (kunena Latest) are loading an empty avatar. Until now it was loading nothing (just a dot)

Hold on...: The module is back to loading dots

no it is not possible to recover the deleted avatars with that last change of xillibit.
If you want to get those avatars back you should restore a backup from before that time ?

I already thought so. Alas that's not an option; we will loose too many posts.
