Are you sure you're working on the correct DB? I don't see how it could be possible.

My Joomla installation (on my remote server) is pointing to Hostname=localhost which I think is correct. I'll check this with my ISP - they should have an answer shortly. Is it possible that the remote Joomla installation might be pointing back to the localhost on my own PC? How do I tell? If it will help, I can email you the site and db logins if you want to have a look.

grumblemarc is right really: the forum test message can only have been written in a database.

So, I would try the following steps:

1. Write an article in your Joomla-Installation with a word, than can not be written somewhere else e.g: BrxQlouooZ2i (save article)
2. The same procedure with a Forum post, but another impossible word e.g.: ForumZwx93zfPw (save post)
3. Remember these two words.

Now export your database to your pc (harddrive) and open this *.sql file with Notepad++ .

Activate the search function of notepad++ (shortcut CTRL F) and search in document for both words. If you find both, you are sure now, that kunena and joomla use this database.

Now search your mysterious posting. And look in which Table this Posting is.

If you found both words, but not the words of your testpost, call ghostbusters

Oh boy... this is spooky. I wrote a new article (containing a unique string) and saved it. Same thing with a message in Kunena. Then I downloaded the db to my local hard drive and searched it... No sign of either the article or the post! And no sign of it on the db I used for developing the site on my local hard disk before I uploaded it to the server either!!

Further searching and comparing reveals that the database contains the data it contained when I originally uploaded the site to the remote host... but none of the new articles I have added since!

So where is my data being stored??? It's obviously being stored somewhere!

Is there a buffer or cache on remote servers where it may be lurking?

I'm going to contact my ISP again and ask them if the site might be using an (invisible to me) backup db rather than the main db.

Failing that, I'll be needing that number for Ghost Busters after all!

Like I said. It might be another DB. Can you confirm from your Joomla config that you are working with the right one?
