The language in those options is not the best possible. Here is the explanation:
Public access = users, who have only frontend access
Backend access = users, who have also backend access
So basicly purpose of these two settings is to say that user must be Publisher OR Administrator to have access on this forum. It means that authors, editors and managers do not have access to the category. Super admin has no meaning as it administrator has automatic global moderator rights.
Previously Kunena acted like this only when you were using English -- translations broke the feature.
You can also say Nobody in public access (1.5.12+), which means that you need to have backend access to see the forum.

Hello,
This kind of things can be managed by Joomla! 1.6 ACL, but this is planned to be in Kunena but not in K1.6.

I'm switching from a different forum type to Joomla with Kunena, but can't find (maybe it doesn't exist?) a feature to hide boards to only a set group of users.
Mainly 16+ content. There's just some content kids shouldn't be seeing. Is there something I overlooked, or is this a mod I'll have to install?

Just wanted to share my experience with everyone. I was able to setup Custom User Groups with no hacks, and have everything appear to work perfectly with assigning different groups of users access to privileged forums.
I used Jxtended Libraries and Control Extension from Content Manager extention. www.theartofjoomla.com/extensions/content-manager.html I did not even had to install the content manager itself, just the two supporting components. It even allows users to be part of more that one group.
I read this whole thread and the theme seems to be that its not possible, its not possible, its not possible. My method actually seemed very simple. Am I missing something?

G'day, alexey91, and welcome to Kunena.
Throughout the course of this topic I'm fairly sure that I've written that implementing customised access control, specifically as far as Kunena is concerned, is not natively possible with Joomla but that it is possible if users are prepared to invest time and/or money in obtaining a third-party solution. What we have not yet seen, though, is a worked-through example of implementing a third-party extension with Kunena.
The Content Manager extension that you referred to is for Joomla articles; this extension has also been in beta for about 14 months. Both of these factors cast some doubt over whether that product would be viable for Kunena. The Content Manager extension relies upon JXtended Control component which has been retired by JXtended .
