In Kunena configuration panel, in the tab Integration, what do you have for Access Control ?

This error is displayed when you see which page in kunena (view a message, post/reply to a topic, view a profile...) ?

I don't provide support by PM, because this can be useful for someone else.

... and it would also help if you upgraded to K 1.6.2, too! ;)

Upgraded to 1.6.2 same result.

In Control panel Access choices are Auto Detect / Community Builder / Joomla. Same result with any choice.

Legacy mode on of off, same result.

I never get to any Kunena page. I get this from a menu choice. The menu choice is a Kunena forum Entry Page. The same thing happens with any Kunena menu choice.

Why are you still using Legacy mode ... after your claim that you disabled it? Please read the very important information about Legacy mode and remove your dependence on this "feature". I know this is not what's causing the problem but it can't hurt to be on the safe side, can it? ;)

I have Legacy mode enabled because I still have a few components that require it. I am working on replacing them but that is not complete yet.

I see in administrator/components/com_kunena/libraries/integration/access.php and in integration.php that the test for the Joomla version is based upon the presence of JPATH_LIBRARIES.'/joomla/access'. While I don't have J1.6 running, I do have this directory on my system. Is this not part of the basic J1.5?
