Check who is the owner of the files/folders, make sure is the user same as the one used to install kunena eg. root or the ftp user. Also make sure all folders are created, perhaps some is missing....

cheers

Thanks for you reply Baze

Re folders missing as a ordinary user i would not have a clue what folders there should be let alone if any were missing.

The kunena package was installed using the recommended url install method

This error is a shame i was looking forward to using the package

Is the error message generic or does it relate to a specific folder that perhaps could be created manually?

many thanks Henryparrot

I have now searched the forum here for that particular error which seems to crop up quite often

a number of the posts the ones that resolve the issue that have said so seem to have changed a few things and it worked otheres appear to me it was never resolved so i assume they gave up and did not use kunena.

Surely as these are fresh installs this is something that perhaps should be looked into more as im sure there are many people who install this get this error as there are no definate answers they just give up.

I would very much to like to use Kunena but this error is something that does not seem to have a definate answer and seems to recur there is not even an explanation anywhere what folders kunena is trying to create.

Im sure many kunena users are not php experts so we do need help with things like this

many thanks

A lot of people have difficulties with installing Kunena because their websites do not meet the technical requirements . Because people have these difficulties our focus, in writing such key documentation as "technical requirements", is to focus attention on the essentials.

In the article K 1.6 Technical Requirements we address (in passing) the ownership and permission settings on folders and files. As I am sure you would imagine, there should be nothing particularly remarkable about these things but, even so, everyone's Joomla site preparation is different. The key to a successful installation of Kunena is a well-prepared Joomla site. If we could better transmit that message then we would probably not encounter the installation questions that we get.
