Thank you, Terrence. And may I also say that your English is very good, better than a lot of what I've seen written by people for whom English is their native language!
I suspected that "one level up" meant that you were referring to a "child" group (see the image I posted earlier). I'm a little concerned, from what GM wrote (and he's much more knowledgeable about the technicalities of Kunena than me), that suggests it's not possible to hide forums based on Joomla user-types (e.g. manager, administrator, super-administrator). And yet you write that you've been partially successful! Well, I'm more confused than ever now.
But, if you would indulge me for just a moment longer, have you tried changing the forum settings (see image above) to make Include child groups = "yes" and does that make any difference?

I've just fixed this kind of bug, which showed child forums in showcat view even if they were hidden.
This may be related to that another one as it was shown only in some environments, but not in all of them. I'm trying to look at this one, if it really is a bug and not configuration problem.
BTW: Allowed forums are saved into session. Did you try this with a new user or did you change your own permissions?

I am sorry I did not follow up on this sooner (shabby internet connection, bank holidays etc). It all works now, I just had to change the permissions to a higher setting for it to also work in the recent discussions tab. Thanks anyways, for your support.
