Thank you, guerilla. I think you've illustrated the problem, however there seems to be some setting that is affecting the category view.

We could go back and forth, looking at screenshots all day. Would it be possible for you to provide me with the URL link to your website? You can PM it to me, if you prefer.

Try turning announcement on. BBcode/smiley are making trouble when announcement is turned off.

This worked for me too, thanks!

I upgraded from Joomla 1.0.15 to 1.5.10 by installing, then overwriting the forum table data via phpmyadmin with the old forum tables from Joomla 1.0. Afterwards, on attempting to create a new categories, it was assigned an ID of 0 which broke the forums. Also, the first attempt to create a new category destroyed an old category, but that only happened the first time. I went into phpmyadin and assigned the new category and ID from there, and that seems to have fixed it.

Thank you for your good thoughts. I tried renaming sh404 fireboard plugin to kunena.,phop as suggested elsewhere, but when I did, each category showed up multiple times in the top level container. I think I have to start all over.
