So far, I've downloaded every version (zip ,gz, tar etc.) and tried installing only to get the error I posted above.
I've also tried uploading to a /temp folder in the root. Unfortunately, every time I try to "install from directory" it gives me a white screen after about 3 minutes of waiting.
Just as a test, I tried installing from /bleh (that didn't even exist) and got the same white screen.
To make sure bits and pieces didn't get installed, I checked after every attempt via ftp that no files had been moved to the components folder... nothing...

As I wrote in my first response to you, because you are using Joomla 1.5, your other questions about whether Kunena involves components, modules or mambots (mambots died with J! 1.0) are irrelevant in a J! 1.5 installation context.
There have been rare cases, in the past, associated with file and directory permissions . These are quite advanced web server management concepts and one would not normally anticipate them in the first instance.
There also have been problems with a failure to complete the execution of the Kunena installation package within a particular time limit. Likewise, these cases are quite rare (considering the thousands of instances of Kunena that have been successfully installed around the world). If the PHP max. execution time limit does come into play, it might be something your web hosting service can help you with. Ask them if there's anything they can do. Likewise, if you don't inderstand file and directory permissions, ask your web hosting company for help on that matter too.
It's also possible, from what you've written, that your website lacks the means to unzip files!
But, before we ultimately conclude that you've got a most unusual and very different website configuration to everyone else's, how about we eliminate problems with the standard Joomla installation of Kunena?

To do that we need to fix Joomla. We have already sent them a patch which will fix a bug in their installer.
