Turns out the legacy mambot needed to be active in order to install. It's now up but with one major bug.
Fatal error: Unable to load messages.\nDB function failed with error number 0
This error occurs any time I try to click "Categories." The base root of Kunena displays correctly, but it's only showing the "Welcome to Kunena" default thread. Every other button works just fine, but when you click "Categories" the page breaks as though it cant find the CSS.
I'm betting my green-ness has overlooked some major radio button somewhere...
I've checked and all permissions are set to writeable.

Try to enable Joomla debug mode in the backend. Does it give you the error?
Also give your PHP and MySQL version numbers.

I gave up on Kunena altogether because the issues have been too many to deal with.
Instead, I downloaded Fireboard. It installed the first time with zero issues, the forums all work and the rays of heaven are shining at last.
After several version upgrades, I may look into Kunena again...
Many sincere thanks to all who tried to help.

I wonder how many parts of the installation guide you haven't followed, either?
Yes, you have problems and we're sympathetic to them. Can I suggest to you, to get hold of the book Beginning Joomla! by Dan Rahmel.
Kunena 1.0.10 works!
This, in my opinion, concludes this discussion about how to install K 1.0.10.
It's not a mambot - there's no such creature in Joomla 1.5.x which is what I wrote in #17244 - it's a plugin! Surprise, surprise ... you need the legacy plugin enabled (which is one of the first things I wrote (in #17165 ) and I even referred you to information on how to do that!Turns out the legacy mambot needed to be active in order to install. It's now up but with one major bug.
