... ah, yes: the diabolical sh404SEF component!

I've never bothered with it - I don't have too many problems. FYI, moof, you might like to review your Joomla SEO/SEF settings as discussed at docs.kunena.com/index.php/Search_engine_optimization_%28SEO%29 - those tips produce "reasonable" URLS also.

Ok Sozzled I've taken your advice and removed it as I've read plenty supporting what Grumblemark said about sh404sef causing problems with a lot of mods, and I don't need it it jumping up and biting me in the arse in 6 months when the sites going fine!

I know I going off topic but whats the rave about SEF urls anyhow? will it get you more visits?

As I wrote in the Wiki , Search Engine Optimization is a Joomla! feature that permits the translation of URLs into a more readable form for use with search engine spiders (e.g the URL: www.example.com/index2.php?option=com_content&view=etc ..., would turn into: www.example.com/alias ). This does not imply that your website will receive more traffic, nor does it mean that your website will operate less efficiently without SEF URLs, but it does mean that your site's URLs are more "meaningful" - if you understand my meaning.

Wouldn't you prefer to access your site by remembering a simpler address, like <my-domain.com>/FAQs instead of <my-domain.com>/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&id=3&Itemid=41? I certainly would. Using obscure-sounding URLs, like in the example I've just given you, although not technically incorrect are a disincentive to your users - your users think that a machine is running your website instead of a human being who gives a damn. In a nutshell, that's what SEF URLs are all about.

When a search engine trawls your website, assembling URL links, wouldn't you prefer your site to appear in Google (or wherever) with a "neat" meaningful name, instead of all that gibberish? That's the hype; that's the benefit ... and that's about all there is to it. B)

Sod it I'm not breaking my site with that crap! If my urls were 'meaningful' they'd be out of sync with my content! anyhow give it 2 yrs and SE's will probably translate them anyway :S

But thanks for the explaination :)
