Upgrade K7.x

The actual installation procedure takes less than two minutes on most sites. Kunena is a Joomla component and it is installed like any other Joomla extension using the Joomla installer.

  1. Technical Requirements
  2. Make sure that you have properly implemented Joomla Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Upgrading software is not something to be done impulsively. It requires good planning and site preparation. The key to a successful and trouble-free upgrade of Kunena depends on having a solid Joomla foundation upon which you can build a web-based discussion forum. This solid foundation relies as much on your own understanding about how to install Joomla extensions as it does on having a dependable hosted environment.

It is important to create a backup before the upgrade. Also create an additional backup of the Kunena database tables and the /media/kunena folder!

Upgrade from Kunena 6.4.9 to Kunena 7.x

An upgrade to K7.x is only possible from the Kunena version K6.4.9

These steps have always worked in tests to upgrade from Joomla 5.x to Kunena 7.x to Joomla 6.x

  1. Uninstall all Kunena extensions, they are not customized for Kunena 7.x
  2. Upgrade Kunena to K6.4.9
  3. Important! Go to the Kunena Dashboard after the Upgrade so that the Kunena database tables are also updated!
  4. Now check your Joomla site if everything works correctly
  5. If everything is ok, create a full backup again
  6. Upgrade to Kunena 7.x
  7. Important! Go again to the Kunena Dashboard after the upgrade. (This is particularly necessary for major version jumps so that the Kunena database tables are also updated).
  8. Upgrade to Joomla 6.x

Upgrade from a lower Kunena version if Joomla has already been updated to version 6

  2. Upgrade Kunena to K6.4.9

  4. Now check your Joomla site if everything works correctly
