Kunena 2.0.3 Security Release
- Details
The Kunena team has now released Kunena 2.0.3 for J! 1.5 and J! 2.5. K 2.0.3 is a security and maintenance release for Kunena that addresses over 75 issues that were reported since the last version release. The Kunena team recommends this updated version as a replacement for any earlier version of Kunena.
Details about K 2.0.3 are contained in the Kunena 2.0.3 release notes. Although K 2.0.3 is only a minor dot-point release, there are enough changes in behaviour between this version and the previous release (K 2.0.2) that make it essential for people to read the release notes before upgrading. Reading the release notes will better prepare you for changes to the way Kunena now works.
As a security response against possible XSS attacks, K 2.0.3 makes all previous versions of Kunena obsolete and no longer supported by the team. We encourage all users to upgrade to this new version as soon as possible to avoid the possibility that your forum's operations may be compromised as a result of this issue.
With the release of K 2.0.3 out of the way, the Kunena team will now be able to focus attention on the development of K 3.0. The essential differences between K 3.0 and K 2.0 are
- K 3.0 will not support J! 1.5
- K 3.0 will support J! 2.5 and J! 3.0
K 2.0.3 Highlights
- A potential XSS vulnerability has been detected and changes have been made to address this matter.
- Changes to improve compatibility with J! 2.5, PHP, HTML and CSS (including the interoperability with some third-party plugins that may be used with Kunena).
- Changes to improve compatibility with RSS feeds and other fixes relating to RSS content filtering
- Fixes to many reported problems with Kunena menu types that failed to work since the introduction of K 2.0
- Changed behaviour: Moderators can now delete unapproved topics and posts
- Changed behaviour: Users no longer have the option to change their votes in polls. This feature (introduced in K 1.7) has caused numerous problems and, for sake of continued reliability, it was decided that this option should be removed from the component.
- Changed behaviour: Guests can now see if attachments exist. This change sets K 2.0 behaviour to the way the forum behaved in K 1.7)
- Changed behaviour: Added confirmation dialog to Restore Default Settings
- Improved security and operation in connection with Kunena Announcements
- Remediation of Last post date "42 years ago" - access denied to topic - database errors

The future of K 2.0
With the release of K 2.0.3 completed, and with the team now focusing on K 3.0, we would expect that this version will be the last in the K 2.0 series. This means that K 2.0.3 will be the only version supported (by the team) as far as J! 1.5 is concerned, but only to the extent of providing essential hotfixes. It is unlikely that a new version of K 2.0 will be released after this time.
What this means for those who have J! 1.5 websites is that they will be stuck with K 2.0 and people will not be able to take advantage of enhancements, features or bugfixes that may occur in future. What this means for those who have J! 1.5 is that, at some stage after the release of K 3.0, K 2.0 will no longer be supported by the team. This should signal J! 1.5 site operators to consider their strategic position as to how they will proceed from now. While there is no urgency at this time for people to upgrade from a website that they currently have no problems with, this does not mean that people should necessarily become complacent either. These are matters for each J! 1.5 site owner to consider for themselves.
The future of Kunena is tied to the future of Joomla. With J! 3.0 soon to be used more widely, the team is making efforts to respond to the ongoing challenges of ensuring that Kunena meets the growing demand for the "latest and greatest".

Kunena 2.0.2 Released
- Details
The Kunena Project is pleased to announce the maintenance release of Kunena 2.0.2. This is a native Joomla extension compatible with versions 1.5.x and 2.5.x. All users are encouraged to upgrade.
This release includes a number of fixes, including compatibility with content plug-ins, issues with attachments, and a category manager ordering issue. There are also a number of small new features that allow posters to change topic icons during reply and the option to disable IP tracking.
Please refer to the Kunena 2.0.2 release notes - you should should also read the important information contained in the release notes for Kunena 2.0 if you are upgrading from a version earlier than 2.0. You can read more about Kunena 2.0 here.
We also want to remind the community that, in keeping with plans previously announced in the Kunena project roadmap for 2012, support for K 1.7 ceased on 31 August and the forum no longer is the place to discuss issues or problems related to that version. Also, as part of the project's ongoing activities to place the forum on a more financially self-sustaining footing, members of the forum to give a greater emphasis on the essential self-help nature of Kunena. We hope that members of the community will find this new approach will better target the kinds of questions or ideas they may want to share with the community.
The forum is now divided into 6 sections:
- Official Announcements and News about Kunena: This section carries important information about upcoming releases and future plans. We strongly encourage all members of the community to subscribe to this category.
- Community self help: This is a collection of the general and "how to" questions about the actively supported version(s) of Kunena, questions about installation, customising, and many other matters that users may want to share with the community that may, or may not, come under the direct control of the Kunena project team.
- The Kunena Project: This section is about how the Kunena project can make things better for everyone. We hope, too, that people will continue to bring to our attention genuinely serious problems that may affect others who use Kunena on their websites. This is why we are moving our "support" service more to a "defect reporting and resolution centre". In the past, many people may have felt that "free support" for their unique problems was an unlimited commodity; that has never been the case and we felt it was necessary to make the distinction clearer. We do understand that some people have genuine issues that affect only them and no-one else and we will do our best, in a community-driven, self-help forum context to provide advice as best we can. We hope to be able to announce new services that will better help users who have specific and unique issues.
- Kunena in other languages
- Community feedback: This is where we encourage you to give us your thoughts about the product, the website, and new ideas for improvements to Kunena

Did you forgot to mention that the emoticons folder will be changed? I've updated from Kunena 2.0.1 to 2.0.2
The emoticons are now stored in the media folder, before they were stored in the templates folder?
Just saying because it cost me a little time to find out
The New Kunena Website
- Details
Welcome to the new Kunena website!
This website has undergone many changes in the four years since it was first launched. As the Kunena Project continues to grow, we know that changes are needed so that the site also reflects this growth. Therefore, we've used this opportunity to implement ideas that will ensure the project's continuity. We want to assure all members of our intention that we will continue to serve the community as we always have but there will be also be more announcements in the coming weeks about how we intend to enhance those services even further.
While we're fairly sure that you will welcome many of these changes, we've also said good-bye to a few "old faithfuls". Among those features that have disappeared are JomSocial, the Kunena Extension Directory and the "Vote for new features" feature. Another thing that had disappeared was the integrated private messaging system.
The new Kunena website relies on a standard build of Joomla and Kunena. We felt that it was important to keep things as simple as possible and future-proof the website so that, when the need arises to migrate to future versions of Joomla, we will not be hamstrung by legacy issues that may impact on site maintainability when future versions of Joomla emerge.
Designing and implementing the website for Joomla 2.5 gave us the opportunity to refocus our attention on our current and future business. Although the primary goal of Kunena as open-source, community-driven software — that is available free-for-use — remains, we're putting into action alternative methods to derive a more sustainable income stream that will assist the project into the future. These opportunities will present new challenges for all of us in terms of how people perceive the way we've assisted them to utilise a web-based discussion forum component in their websites. These challenges may be difficult for all of us to accept and how we're going to handle the difficulties that often come when change occurs.
Our policy has always been, we believe, about transparency and that's the one constant that we're sure will remain unchanged.

The old Kunena logo was more interesting.
I liked effect upon transition between pages.
I would replace this color #0099FE with this color #5388B4. It more readable. The THANK YOU button is now painted with this color.
Very nice work for this update.
A small note in passing
For credit kunena page concerns the link on this well on all versions of translation.
Redirects would be desirable for the following pending correction of translation files
Sorry for my english not always brilliant in conversation
This is the first day of your new site/design for me and it looks nice but I got a lot of white blank pages after logging in, and traveling around the threads I needed to use the "back" button a lot to view the items
I am also unsure of your facebook twitter and google buttons right on the scroll bar
Anyway just my first look
Would like a profile status in the header, to see if you are logged in or not
Eg a menu option with forum and then on with support.
Dont see why it should be difficult to get to the forum. Its a forum tool and therefore easy forum access, if you ask me
The red-blue kunena theme in the forum is a little too strong....
I like the follow on facebooks tabs, what module is that?
Congrates. Nice with a new layout...!
I switched my site immediately to this template, but I still need to have videos resized as well, so went back to normal template...
joomlabamboo's fitvids plugin is supposed to work for AllVideos extensions as well, but did not work for me...
anyway, the page is much cleaner and more modern as well
I do miss the extra detail though..
Mirage and Joomla Bootstrap, Thinking Forward
- Details
There have been a few questions asked about why Kunena did not release a new template for Kunena version 2.0. As well as these, we understand that people would also like to know about Kunena Team's position in relation to the future of Joomla and the support of Bootstrap. We like to share with you how we are thinking forward for Kunena's design.
Kunena team members have been actively reviewing Kunena's current design. It was decided over a year ago that Kunena needed improvement to meet current web design practices including utilising new HTML5 and CSS standards, improving the perception about how website users should be able to interact in a web-based discussion forum context, and to draw Kunena closer to Joomla.
But how to do this? How to achieve a recognisable User Interface (UI) that is more flexible, adaptive and can deploy the software’s features more quickly while, at the same time, avoiding design conflicts with the other design practices in the “Joomlaverse”? How to improve the perception about how Kunena should be used?

This topic outlines what is involved and the general concept about the Mirage template. It's good to know these things. People can follow the progress on GitHub. Kunena is open source software and the development activity is open to anyone to observe and interact as much (or as little) as they want to or as they are capable of doing.
anyone had a look on github?
Mootools will be also included, but not needed anymore for Core-Joomla (and be disabled as standart).
So for Kunena it would be also great to switch to JQuery.
A little suggestion to the template: I would like the 'New topic' and the 'Reply' buttons to show up for not-signed in users as well. If they click this button the should be taken to a log-in/sign-up page. That would have more users to participate in the forum, I think. Great work, anyways!
Randal wrote: Joomla 3.0 = Bootstrap = jQuery ...
My last info is, that MOOTOOLS will still be included in J!3.0
As we know Kunena WAS based on jQuery then convert to Mootools to have full compatibility. So what's now?
I'll be very happy to see Kunena native on jQuery again. And this is direction of Joomla 3.0 so? You will left Mootools also in Kunena 3.0? How much work it is?
