Why would the Disable Emoticon option be missing from the configuration.

I think you are looking in the wrong Kunena configuration, the settings for Disable Emoticon option are in Aurelia under BBCode.

There is no setting to disable Emoticons in Aurelia config, only this one:-

I was looking in the min Kunena config as that's where the Documentation says it should be, thus:

OK, I hold my hands up, I made a boo boo
I DIDN:T FULLY READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! DOH!!!

I uploaded the Emoticon/Smiley as directed but that's just STEP 1 I didn't follow it through to STEP 2

You need to ADD A NEW SMILEY (Emoticon - confusing dual terminology used in the system). Then the Smiley/Emoticon is added to the database for use by the editor.

So having followed STEP 2 I now have working Smileys/Emoticons.

Just a shame the two steps cannot be combined as is done on other forum software.

Anyway, happy now and thanks for all the input, the learning curve continues...

Can reproduce it on clean install. With or without sample data.

I can only reproduce it if no sample data is installed, or if a smiley was uploaded before the sample data was installed. Then the installation of the sample data fails because a smiley ID has already been assigned.
Remedy:
1. empty the #__kunena_smileys table
2. change the sampleData column in the #__kunena_version table from 1 to 0
3. reinstall the sample data in the Joomla dashboard

@ChasL0001
Have you got all the smileys now? If not, try these three steps after you have created a backup of your database.

Important! Always create a backup before you make any changes to your website!
