Hey there,
I ran into some issues with the migration of an Joomla 3.9.8 to Joomla 4.4.3 with Kunena 5.1.. (now 5.2.) and Kunena 6.2.4. Sounds hard? It is. But maybe you got some help.

I try my best to stay focused and describe what I did.
  • We had an really old Joomla site with old PHP Version and I still have this locally in my XAMPP with PHP 7.3.
  • New Joomla 4.4.3 with already installed Kunena (sadly, my fault)
  • I exported the kunena-tables from the Kunena 5.1 Version like describe in the migration guide here:  www.kunena.org/docs/en/faq/migrate-the-f...-users-to-a-new-site
  • Then I jumped over to the new page, and first uninstalled via Joomla Extension Manager the whole Kunena Stuff
  • then imported the old tables, like mentioned in the migration guide (link above) --> include the prefix step and so on
  • Tried to installed Kunena --> Installation abort "You Should not upgrade from Kunena 5.1." ok.. no problem
  • Removed all kunena Tables from the Database on the new server again. Made sure no Kunena Plugins are installed --> So far so good
  • Back to the old page on my local Xampp. Update Kunena to Version 5.2.14 - Exported the tables again like the migration guide above
  • Jump over to the new page, Imported the table, prefix change and so on
  • Ran into an error --> unkown table and so on (fix for that -->  www.kunena.org/forum/k-6-0-support/16762...ield-list-kunena-6-x ) after that different troubles with kunena Plugins and Installation of Language pack failed (said Kunena is not installed and stuff)
  • Also when I tried to install Kunena there was always "Copy Fail Error".. the Component were quite there, but with error, and it felt like the setup did not run to the end

So... that's kind of the whole story. Because I tested a lot later... which always ended up in remove the kunena_tables from the database and uninstall the Kunena Forum via Extenstion Manager or via Kunena itself (if possible). Also cleaned the cache and stuff.

The whole Joomla setup is running in a web hosting solution. No root-Server.

My question and thanks for reading until here. What is the best way to fully remove the Plugin now and get a complete clean install? I don't want the old data from the previous page anymore. I just want a clean and fresh install. :-)

because the new Joomla Page is up and running (only forum missing) I would not like to re install Joomla.

Best and thanks!!!

Do you want a completely new forum just because of the difficulty with the migration, or do you want to fundamentally reorganise the forum?
If you want a new forum, the best way would have been if you had already removed Kunena 5.1 from the old Joomla installation via Kunena -> Tools -> Uninstall Kunena. Then search for Kunena via the extension manager to uninstall all Kunena extensions, if available. Then migrate Joomla to 4.4.3 and then reinstall Kunena.
Since you still have the old site, try it this way. But make sure you keep a backup of your old site.
This would have been the right way to migrate: docs.kunena.org/en/basics/upgrade/upgrade-k6-x
And this is a guide for a new installation for Kunena 6.x: docs.kunena.org/en/basics/installation/installation-k6-x

Hey there,
thanks for answering. I wanna do a clean install on the new page. No migration at all. :-)

Thanks for the links and stuff. Will test it and if there is still an error with the installation I will post it here.

Sadly this won't work... no matter how I uninstall Kunena (also with the manually search for extensions and remove).. this error always comes up when i try to reinstall.

"Install path does not exist"

I have it in the component menu after that error.. but cannot install the "Language Pack" for example..

Also tried clean cache and stuff after uninstallation. No success so far. Looks like something is broken now because my migration trying before maybe. It is only with the Kunena Extension so far. Other extensions work, so I do not think that it has something to do with permissions.

Is there a cache or something somewhere? This is really really weird...

When the mentionend error-message is coming up I still see the component on the side menü in the Admin-Backend... and can create categories and stuff,.. but in the end I am running in to compiler Issues and other errors, when I try to call to the FOrum via the menu... which is for sure because the installation did not run completley. :-/

So... if there is any recommendation how I could clean up my whole installation-madness and re-install the component completely clean, that would be awesome. :-)

not sure which Point I missing in the whole thing. Thanks so far for the support! :-)

Error-Message when clicking on the link in the Menue (after failed installation, but component showing and recreate menu...)

    ERROR 0 - Class "KunenaScssPhp\ScssPhp\Compiler" not found in /homepages/38/d987060621/htdocs/clickandbuilds/NB2024/libraries/kunena/src/Template/KunenaTemplate.php:1652

Is it also possible to navigate to Kunena -> Tools in the backend and remove Kunena there? If this works, you could then try a new installation.

Thank! Yes, already tried that.. but running into the same issue or different issue.

It is possible that the whole problem is that I installed the latest version right after Joomla was ready... uninstalled that and then installed an older version for the migration?

Just thinking about the root of all evil in this case ;-) 100% sure it's my fault.

Edit: Or is there an advanced possibilty to see where the installation fails? I acticated logs and checked all the logs from the Joomla-system.. but it does not give me the info I needed. Also trying to copy the libs from the source code on Github.. same here in the end. :-/

I have now deliberately destroyed one of my test sites by importing old Fireboard tables, renaming Prefix to #__kunena and migrating Kunena. I couldn't even access the backend anymore.
    My recovery steps were':
    1. removed all Kunena tables from the database
    2. deleted all Kunena folders (see here)
    3. removed everything related to Kunena from the folder /administrator/manifests (also in the subfolders)
    4. unpacked the installation package and navigated to -> packages -> com_kunena (version) -> sql -> install -> mysql
    5. import the contained file create_tables.utf8 into the database with phpMyAdmin
    6. replaced table prefixes #__ with my prefix
    7. I got an error message in the backend because Kunena php.files are not available
    8. ignored error message and installed Kunena, created menu and installed sample data
After that everything worked fine again. I hope that this works for you too.

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer... sadly not worked. :/ I even tried searching for any "Kunena"-Files via console and nothing found in the end.

Used Kunena 6.2.5 with Joomla 4.4.3... PHP 8.2.16,  MySQLi 10.6.15-MariaDB-log. Here are screenshots and a link to the page. I have no ideas now to be honest... If I can fix the issue manually I will do. Or is there anything I am missing? Maybe a missing plugin or something I have to activate manually?

Edit: Just tested what happens when I activate all the KUNENA Plugins.. then it also show different files missing, like in the last screenshot. For better debugging, I activate just the necessary Plugins again. So everything that stands here, is now Status Quo.

The installation fails with this error:  "Installation Path does not exist"

But Component is present in Backend then, also the checkup says everything is fine.

    But when I call..
    Code:
    https://musikmagazin-saarland.de/index.php/forum?view=home&defaultmenu=651

same error as before: Class "KunenaScssPhp\ScssPhp\Compiler" not found
    Error Stack:

The installation always stops at the sampledata plugin. This means that the installation runs until then. Does the installation also stop if you try to install this plugin separately? You can find it in the installation package.
