Question Avoid /forum in the URL

Hi everyone!

I have been using Kunena decades, and my forums have 2,7 million post... but I decide to migrate to Wordpress the articles and news of my website, and left joomal+kunena in a subfolder called, let's say /cruise-forums (that is the same URL that have my forums for many years).

All I want is that joomla homepage be kunena forums home, so, muy mainmenu Home points to Kunena->Homepage. That works well, because when I navigate to mysite.com/cruise-forums the forums appear and you can enter a category and everything is ok mysite.com/cruise-formus/category etc...

The problem cames when you click any option on the Kunena Menu, because they add an additional /forums to the URL. So, when you click on any of the Kunena menu options you get mysite.com/cruise-forums/forums/new-topic or mysite.com/cruise-forums/forums/recent-topics etc....

My question is, is there a way that I can avoid this? the problem came from Mainmenu main option that is the one that have an alias called forums

Thanks for your help!

Problem: Clicking Kunena menu items adds an extra segment to the URL (e.g. /forums/), because the main menu contains a direct Kunena item with the alias forums.

Solution – simple rule:

In the backend (Administrator) you should have a complete Kunena menu – all the items you need: Forum Index, Categories, Recent Posts, New Topic, Edit, Profile, etc. This is your “source” of links.

On the frontend, do not add direct Kunena items (i.e. the same ones as in the backend). The frontend must contain only aliases – every frontend menu item must be of type Menu Item Alias and point to the corresponding item from the Kunena menu in the backend.

Steps:

Backend: create a full Kunena menu in the Administrator menu (e.g. “Kunena Admin”) with all required items.

Frontend: create a menu (e.g. “Forum”) and add only items of type System Links → Menu Item Alias, selecting as target the corresponding items from the Kunena menu in the backend.

Do not add any direct items on the frontend such as “Kunena Forum”, “Kunena – Categories”, etc. – only aliases.

Clear Joomla and Kunena cache, then test – URLs should be correct, without the extra /forums/.

Why it works: aliases do not create new routing paths – they point to existing items from the backend, so Joomla does not append extra segments to the URLs.

Nothing is wrong with your setup, this is just how Joomla builds the URLs. The Kunena menu items are children of the Kunena home item, so its alias stays in the URL, even when that item is the homepage.

About the solution above: unfortunately you can’t set a Menu Item Alias as the default (home) menu item, Joomla won’t let you save that.

The easiest fix is to change the alias of your Kunena home menu item from “forums” to something else, so you don’t get “cruise-forums/forums” in your URLs. Something like “board” or “community”.

Another option you might consider is renaming your subfolder, but that might involve more changes (like redirects).

Oooh! I was so happy when I read the first answer... but, you're right, I can't setup an aliases menu as homepage.

And perhaps I should consider change my subfolder name and put on action some redirects, but, at the end, my setup is not ok, because I have some items with wrong URLs.

Look, this is what I have now:
If I have the mainmenu homepage pointing to kunena->homepage the kunenamenu doesn't appear before the categories list.
I have to create submenu items on the mainmenu, like Home->Kunena->Category List, New topic->Kunena->new topic.. in order to the kunenamenu appear on screen.

And I guess that is the main problem with all.

So, why kunenamenu doesn't show when I have Kunena->homepage as the homepage is the question now. What is the correct setup to have kunena as homepage?

Thanks for your help guys

It looks like I can only have one menu item pointing to Kunena-Homepage and all the sub items become the kunenamenu in fact.

That is what is happening in my site, I have the mainmenu homepage pointing to kunena-homepage with the alias forums, and then, submenu items for new topic, recent topics, profiles, etc... because if I don't have those submenu items, the kunenamenu area shows empty.

You’re right, Kunena uses one Kunena Home item and shows its child items in the Kunena menu bar. Since your Joomla site is only used for the forum, you don’t need a main menu at all. Kunena already created a “Kunena Menu” with a Kunena Home item and all the sub items (Index, Recent, New Topic, etc.). Just set that Kunena Home item as your default/home page and remove the Kunena items you created in the main menu. You’ll still have the alias of that home item in your URLs, so change it to something short. If it still doesn’t work, please post screenshots of your Kunena Menu in the backend.
