K 3.0 will only be available for J! 2.5 and J! 3.0. Now that Joomla has removed support for J! 1.5 there will be no future versions of Kunena for J! 1.5.

I still do not have an answer from the team about why the *_notlogin.gif images do not work as category icons.

According to the information I have received, there is an issue with category icons.

The *_notlogin.gif images do not work in K 2.0 (which is contrary to the information in the Wiki). The Wiki needs to be updated to reflect this issue. We currently have a problem with the Wiki in that we cannot update the Wiki at the moment. We're working to fix the issue in the Wiki.

In the meantime, if people are not logged in, they will see the _off.gif image instead. This image works (if you are not logged in).

I am told that the "offline" image may work for sub-categories. I do to know if this is proven.

Because sub-category icons work (as documented in the Wiki) but category icons do not work (as documented in the Wiki) we see this as a defect that will need to be looked at as we go forward with K 3.0. The matter has been reported on GitHub: github.com/Kunena/Kunena-2.0/issues/1408 . I cannot say if this problem will be fixed in K 2.0 but, from all accounts, it probably will not be fixed in K 2.0.

What this means is that you can use category images but only the _on.gif and _off.gif images for categories. If people are not logged in, they will see the _off.gif image instead of the _notlogin.gif image.

That's not a perfect solution, of course, but it should be acceptable in most cases.

This idea (using category icons) was originally an undocumented feature of Fireboard. When Fireboard became Kunena, the feature was carried over. At some point the ability to use the old Fireboard method seems to have been broken. We will be looking at what we can do going forward in K 3.0 to re-instate the functionality but I cannot promise anything at this time.

Further to my comments posted a couple of days ago, the formal response from the Kunena lead developer: github.com/Kunena/Kunena-2.0/issues/1408

Now that is, with all due respect, a bit weird in my opinion (referring to the lead developer's answer)... How is this option "unnecessary" or "confusing"?!

It's actually not at all... you visit the forum and you're not connected? You see grayed out category images (so you don't see if there are new messages). You want to know if new messages are posted? Well you have to login my friend!

This <catid>_notlogin.gif option was actually very clear in its purpose and a good incentive to motivate users or visitors to login/create account.

Oh well, it seems people don't have the same vision as of what is confusing & unnecessary and what is not. :(

The documentation has now been updated to reflect the current behaviour in K 2.0.

I will leave it to Matias to explain the rationale for removing the third option from the source code.
