Hi guys,

I guess many of you have probably looked and different possibilites before you decided to go for Kunena instead of SMF, phpBB, vBulletin and of course the other big player: Agora.

I'm now sitting in that point.

What I like from Kunena is it's easy of use and it's default template looks really nice. But on the other side I find Agora to be a much more mature project, with a very fast support and it seems to be getting a big community with a quite complete roadmap.

So what you like from Kunena or dislike from Agora?

Thanks
Mario

Please keep this civil people. No insults or name calling like I know some will be more than eager to start doing. He has asked this same question, albeit phrased differently, over at the JM forums. Intelligent and informative responses ONLY please.

We love stars on the Joomla Extension Directory . :-)

The Kunena as a project and a community have to mature, for sure, but keep in mind that it has only been on the air for a month! But on the other side I think the Kunena code base is much more mature than the Agora code base. Simpleboard/Joomlaboard/Fireboard was written for joomla and has exist and mature for years. To me knowledge Agora is based on punBB, and modified to fit into Joomla.

A short comparison of some forum solution for joomla:

At this point I 'chose' Kunena simply because my site was already running fireboard. And, frankly, I wasn't aware of Agora until this morning.

I never had much problem with fireboard, and I especially like it's integration with other joomla components. But, yeah, it was always a bit of mystery what was going on with the project and some of the bugs were beyond annoying.

Keep in mind that my install is a low-traffic, low-user, low-thread board ;-). Needless to say, I didn't feel like converting, templating, bridging, hacking to keep this forum secure and working smoothly. So I have been well chuffed by the emergence of Kunena, the transparency of development, the renewed commitment of the development team. I really hope the project matures quickly and I don't have to rethink everything in a few months.

What I'd like to see from Kunena?
* Native (of course) - but really, after getting the code stable and the major bugs squashed I hope the team will throw their weight behind getting this ready for 1.6. I'm sure they are.
* Lighter 'footprint' - I'm way out of my depth with things like SQL requests, but I'm not afraid of no code and I'm a pretty adept, old-school front-end developer/designer. And I can say with some certainty that the fireboard code was a Gordian Knot, and the SQL tables were vast.
* A good, logical over-ride system. Honestly, I haven't really had the time to investigate the RC code, but I recall fireboard was impossible to over-ride which meant hack, hack, hack, right?

Anyway, I just want to encourage the team. Good luck and god speed, friends. If there's anything I can do to help just let me know. I'm not a programmer so I don't think I'd be much core help, but I have a good understanding of web development, and good verbal skills. ;-).

The one and only reason why i choose kunena (was fireboard in the past) is because it is a Joomla forum Application that don't need any bridge to integrate it to your Joomla website, so it will be easier to manage through your Joomlas.
