I still haven't seen that issue, so I have no idea why you get it. Usually you should have long joomla session lifetime, so that users have enough time for posting their messages.

Edit times are for editing the posts -- to fix some typos after posting the message. Usually edit should be allowed only for 15-60 mins so that user does not alter content later.

Thanks, mathias. Getting an explanation about the meaning of Kunena parameters is very instructional.

If I understand correctly, User Edit Time, is a period of time to allow a user to edit their messages, for example to correct information they may have posted. So, if the value is set to 0 (zero), which is the default, this allows the user to correct an earlier post that may be days, weeks or months old. If you set the value to, say 60 minutes, they won't be able to correct their postings after that time. That's a handy feature to have (but it doesn't get to the heart of my problem).

In my case, these are the following settings for Joomla and Kunena:
  • Joomla
    • Session Lifetime = 15 minutes
  • Kunena
  • Session Lifetime = 1800 seconds (30 minutes)
  • User Edit Time = 0 (unlimited)
  • User Edit Grace Time = 600 seconds (10 minutes)
The symptoms of my problem are these: if I (or my users) take more than 15 minutes to compose a forum message, when we press the Submit button we're shown the message "Code not correct". This isn't exactly a helpful message but I'm assuming it relates to the fact that Joomla has timed-out the session.

I agree with you, mathias, that having a long Joomla session lifetime is probably the solution. But what's a reasonable value? If the value is too large it results in a distorted "picture" of how many users are currently logged-in to the site, as I illustrated earlier with a screen capture from the Kunena website:

I'm hoping a few other website managers might contribute to this discussion to share their experiences on what they consider "reasonable" values for the parameters we've been discussing in this topic. For example, it appears that the default Joomla session lifetime of 15 minutes is too short if you're running a site where users are posting forum messages. But, it would also seem that a Joomla session lifetime of, say, 1500 minutes (25 hours) would be excessive and results in giving visitors a false impression that there are hundreds of guests currently viewing the site when this is not the case. May I ask what value is used at the Kunena website and what do people think would be a happy medium?

Thanks

sozzled

[EDIT] I've marked the topic "resolved" because I've got the information needed to address the "code not correct" symptom. The discussion probably should remain ongoing to allow members to share their experiences in setting the parameters we've talked about.
