I seem to be having a very hard time adding images to posts. Can someone tell me how to do that, exactly? I know it should be simple, but I'm just not getting it!

You have to wrap it in image tag like so replacing parentheses with brackets.
So it will appear like this.

Just to make sure we are on the same page, I'm talking about a user uploading a pic from his hard drive, not referencing an image on the web....it looks like what you did was from the web....I'm referring to the "Select image file to attach" box below the message area....

You did not specify that. It's called an attachment. I thought "Select image file to attach" would be self explanatory.
Click the Browse button, locate an image, press submit.

Sorry. It was my impression that a user could just select an image file on his drive, and it would upload to a folder on the host, and then be displayed. It can do that, can't it?

What host? The attachment uploads to a Kunena folder in the Joomla images directory.
.../media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/GW200H200.jpg
is the URL for the image I attached.
Sounds like you are making this harder than it is.
