Create a JPA archive of your site using Joomlapack. Do no use the zip format.

Download it to your computer.

Upload your JPA archive to an empty folder on your server.

Have an empty DB ready.

Use Kickstart (get it from the JoomlaPack site) to run the JPA archive.

Follow the prompts. Have all your server info handy (DB name, password, etc.)

Done.

Like I said before. Use JoomlaPack.

Actually #2 and #6 are the same thing!

That not necessary right. Lets says you make a backup (files and DB) and use them to make a duplicate/test site. Then you spent some time testing (maybe days or weeks). At the time you are ready to update your live site, it it time to make a new backup, because your live site probably contain new content and even new users at this point in time.

By making a duplicate site by backup/restore you have done the steps you need to do the day you need to restore your live site. And that day you are probably so stressed that some training and confidence would do!

PS Remember to use a subdirectory and a different DB-prefix or a different DB for your test site. And remember to change joomla/configuration.php.

These "directions" are confusing. I read and re-read them and still they mean something different each time I do.
