Hello, how are you? After try to update to 1.6.3 I still love Kunena very much and still hate this update.
But, now, i understand better my problem and i would up this post. So i can hello you, Kind Sozzled...
The problem...
My issues are about the template... and about file language of course...
Can I be a bit controversial after a night of missed work for doing nothing?
I continue to pray the fantastic kunena support to have mercy on me and every that are not expert when they give us updates..
Firs of all, for me, you should think that we have not the same site template. Antony has column on the left, John has 3 columns, etc. etc. and Internet explorer does not love joomla so much.. so, after a fight with our template, we have to work to allign (number of pages, strange icons that work out of their space, etc etc.
Kunena template is beautifull. But is not simple, even you said that not is.
An example? I don't want any gender on my forum.... If i use community builder profile, i don't use kunena profile, so i would not gender icon (impossible to assign).
But is a little example.. Why have i to play with the game of "css sprite" for a week every update? The new, is, for example, that if i try with firbug to hide some image, after a hard work (for me, obbviously) i loose the karma .. or others.. Have i create a new template to make some changes? Or have i to reinstall the old version..?
It is too difficoult to make an upgrade without reinstalling all template and language system? I don't know. If not, i pray to consider my request....
Bye

If you create your own template (using the techniques discussed in the Wiki) then any template you make will not be affected by upgrades. The language files are continually being updated; it's just a fact of life. Whenever there is a new upgrade there are updates to the language files. The updates are necessary to correct the issues reported by the community and they're unavoidable.
The "old version" [K 1.5] was many times more problematic than the new version as far as templates were concerned. The old version has issues that will never be properly resolved. If you go back you place yourself at arms-length from the rest of the community.
I sympathise with your observation. Why not make "lighter upgrades". I sympathise with the frustration that many people must feel when they customise Kunena in hundreds of different ways.
I gave away any thought of customising Kunena templates around the time of K 1.5.4. It was too difficult for me to maintain the templates from one version to the next. I stayed with whatever was the default (and I am pleased that I did). This doesn't mean that you can't build your own templates but it does mean that you have to accept that, by doing so, you accept that there will probably be some kind of overhead involved in re-instating changes that you've made because you wanted to be different.
All of the points that you have made are good points. Kunena is an evolving product and, with each new major version, work is ongoing to make it better, more "modular" and more extensible than before. K 1.6 was the first step in that direction. K 2.0 builds on this approach and the future will make a lot more things possible than we've had to deal with up to new.
