Welcome back! We got worried having not heard from you in a while. Glad you are ok.

Here is the reason for the version number removal:

It is seen as a security risk to publish any sort of identifies for version information on the web. The biggest issue is that once we fix a security bug and post about it, the whole world knows about it and people can easily look for sites below that version number.

We added it for the very reason you stated, but had to remove it due to the security concerns.

We love stars on the Joomla Extension Directory . :-)

G'day, fxstein, and thanks for your reply. :) What you say makes sense. Perhaps, to continue to assist novice users, a future version of Kunena could make displaying the version configurable (i.e. you would have explicitly say "no" to an option "Display Kunena version information?" or something like that). In fact, it might make good sense to do this for another reason:

I have seen many requests from users along the lines of "How do I remove the 'Powered by Kunena' details?" Apart from crippling the PHP source code (and, thereby, rendering it unsupportable) it might be a more attractive option to disable the feature with a configuration setting. In that way, those of us, like me, who choose to attribute the development of the Kunena component and give the development team its due credit (and "advertise" the version we're using) will still be able to do so ... or not, as the case may be. Again, this is just my opinion and I'm happy to leave things as they are.

Welcome back sozzled!

Showing version information could be made configurable, like you said. But we do not want to make Powered by Kunena configurable for the free version: it's our reward in Google rank. So keeping it as a hack is unattractive by purpose. If you really need it, you're feel to do it. But most of the users won't do it -- unless it is an option. :)

Maybe a good idea to keep Kunena free, and for those who want a version without credits they can dowload it for lets say € 1,- per upgrade. This way you get best of both worlds: plenty of links and some income to pay for expences.
