I used the standard htaccess file that came with joomla. Is there a modified one that needs to be in place for the forum to work? If so, I some how missed this.

The error is the only thing that appears on the page when you click on the forum link in the main menu. It is a white background, with the error on it. Nothing else. This is also the case when you click on any of the links in the latest mod.

If you read Search Engine Optimization (SEO) you would see that we recommend the use of the standard .htaccess file (the one shipped with the Joomla installation procedure as htaccess.txt that you need to rename as .htaccess).

The error you are getting, and the conditions under which you are getting, seems to point to some kind of routing conflict at your site. This could be caused by having two different Joomla extensions sharing a similarly named menu item. For example, suppose you had two different extensions that did different things but each of them had a menu alias "forum" then the routing process would not know which one to use.

Maybe there is something left over from a previous software installation that was not properly cleaned up?

It's hard to know what's really going on here without knowing everything that has been installed on the website. From the looks of things, there's some other software that has been installed that is conflicting with Kunena ... but I don't know what it is.

I would also suggest that you upgrade to K 1.6.2, remove all Kunena add-ons and see if that makes any difference. If you use Kunena add-ons, make sure that you use add-ons developed as part of the Kunena project and that were designed to be used with K 1.6.
