Question Non-Registered users cannot see categories

I'm not talking about Joomla (or the absence of a "section manager" - you're referring to Joomla articles and there isn't a section manager in J! 1.6). I'm talking about Kunena.

I am not talking about deleting a menu. I am talking about the default Kunena section and two categories that are installed as a standard feature of K 1.6. Even though Sections, Categories, sub-Categories (Part 1) was written for an earlier version of Kunena, the principles are still fairly much the same in K 1.6. If J! 1.6 has some "special" needs (and these "special needs" are not included in the Wiki) I think we'll have to accept that this is just one of those J! 1.6 things.

As we have been trying to tell people for a couple of months now, J! 1.6 is still not really at a stage where K 1.6 works perfectly under that environment. If people want to experiment with J! 1.6, that's OK but they also have to accept that there will be added difficulties until these J! 1.6 teething problems are worked out. If you want a good base for a real production website we still suggest that people should use J! 1.5.22 as that base. That's really the only help I can give you at this time.

I know, for a fact, that you can install K 1.6.3 on a clean J! 1.6.1 site and everything works without having to make too many "adjustments". If you want to adjust things to suit yourself then you really need to have a good understanding about how J! 1.6 works. There are several books that you can read; they're listed in the "further reading" part of the K 1.6 Installation Guide .

Well, I upgraded to Joomla 1.61 because I got a alert from them about security issues. Because of poor support from my hosting Co., I had to completely rebuild the site from scratch. Talk about a nightmare. I have been so persistent because I have over 100 hours invested in this site. at this time the only version of Joomla the hosting co. offers is 1.6.1. I guess this isn't a crucial issue, but with so much invested, I was trying to get everything as close to perfect as possible. This is a great component and looks so much better than comparable extensions. My compliments. I hope this issue is solved soon. In the meantime you should know that I appreciate all of your efforts. I know nothing about programing, so I will just have to wait. There is not enough time in one lifetime to keep up with all of this stuff.

If you had created a clean J! 1.5.22 site, added Kunena and made no changes (and added nothing else) you would have had a working website in less than 90 minutes. J! 1.6.1 has problems - the Joomla community is aware of the problems and so, too, is the Kunena project team. The K 1.6 Technical Requirements article clearly states:

Users may want to experiment with K 1.6 and Joomla 1.6. K 1.6.2 provides some capability to work with Joomla 1.6 and this capability will be extended in future releases. There are issues with installing or using K 1.6.x in Joomla 1.6 at this time. Some of these issues are show-stoppers if users are considering Joomla 1.6 to run their production websites. Many of these issues will be fixed in future versions of Kunena and Joomla. At this time uses are encouraged to report issues with Joomla 1.6 as test cases but support may not necessarily be available to answer issues. Until otherwise advised, please use the K 1.6 test reports category to report issues that you are having with K 1.6 and J! 1.6. Until accepted by the Joomla Extensions Directory as a native Joomla 1.6 extension, K 1.6 is not a Joomla 1.6 native extension.

K 1.6.3 improves on this situation. K 1.6.4 (which is not yet available for public release) improves on the situation even more. However, at this time, the Joomla Extensions Directory does not endorse Kunena as a fully-compatible, native Joomla 1.6 component. This is the message that we have been trying to get across to the Kunena community.

The Kunena project is committed to developing a component that works fully with both J! 1.5 and J! 1.6 but that day has not yet arrived. We ask members of the Kunena community to be patient. We ask members of the community to treat J! 1.6 as a test environment in order to identify problems that can be fixed so that a fully-fledged J! 1.6 component will eventuate.

If users are more interested in building a fully-working website that satisfy the operational demands that their own users have, and they cannot afford to wait until Kunena is fully functional under J! 1.6, then people should use J! 1.5.22.

We are aware of a number of issues in J! 1.6.1 that make this platform "weak" for production purposes. These issues are currently being resolved by the Joomla development team. Until these Joomla issues are fully resolved Kunena will not necessarily attain that "native J! 1.6 component" endorsement in the JED.
