Crap. Okay, let me set them back. Thanks for the insight. I'll go carefully through /media/... and make sure everything is 755/644....

That's the way. Also check with your webhost "Who owns the files?" The should be owned by "Apache" (or so I've been told). Remember, I'm just a user, like you.

A'ight. Sozzled, many thanks. I very much appreciate being led to the answer rather than just given it. I hope this thread is of use to anyone else dumb enough to mess around with folder/file permissions while not clearly understanding them. Ahem... yes, I confess. A recall now a week or so ago when I installed K1.6 I had a flash of inspiration - the sort that hits at 3:00 am - and I do believe I spent some time then changing permissions in the media directory.

So, call this one solved. - correct permissions in media/kunena/... are 755 for directories and 644 for files. Avatar issues seem to have gone away completely.

Thanks for the schooling.

Sigh. I thought I had it sussed. Not the case. Still have invisi-tars. Part two of sozzled's advice was to look into folder/file ownership and see if the owner was Apache. So that's my gig today. Will let yu know what goes on. Wouldn't mind a hint... or three.
