I'm not sure, but I believe you can use .GIF files as avatars. Using animated .GIF files is a different matter. The problem is that when the GD library resizes the GIF file on-the-fly it also kills the animation. If the .GIF file is the same dimensions (and not larger) than the max-size allowed for the avatar image, I have a feeling - you can test this yourself - that the animation is retained. I might try this one day if I'm feeling energetic. ;)

hello xillibit,

thanks for your consideration and your evaluation (you suppose that I know perfectly what is a GD library)

Anyway, I hope that this feature will be introduced as soon as possible.

It is surprising me that one cannot insert a gif image even if it is smaller than the area available (160 x 160 pixels, if I remenber right).
I mean... all the work that should be done is to center the image in the area, I'm right? So... why th GD (I don't know what this stuff is) try to resize what should not resized? This will remains a mistery for me...

I will wait for future releases! Please, don't forget meeeeeee! :(
(as reminder, take a look at my avatar)

Hello again sozzled.

No no no... I was thinking the same thinking of you. Look at my (beatiful) avatar on the right... are you watching it? Yes?
Well, take a seat and relax...
my avatar is exactly 160x160 pixels... :(

As I was trying to explain to xillibit, it sounds very strange that an image is resized even if... is more smaller than the available area.

I mean... I'm the only one thinking that this thing is.... strange?

:D Yes, your avatar image is "beatiful" and I realise that it's not animating. It's something that needs experimentation. I've seen a couple of Kunena forum sites where the members have animated avatar images. It has to do with the physical dimensions of the animated images. I haven't really looked into that kind of thing. Too many animations on a website is a bit too distracting for me; I just like to focus on what's important. Something for people to play with. :)
