:( I've tried all that as well, and still something is not right when I use my "test" account and change my role types. Somewhere, something is preventing me from seeing things the way I want them. Completely lost on what to do.

Well, I have decided to go back to "square one". I created a brand new Category and a brand new Forum...both with these settings:

Public Access Level: All Registered
Include Child Groups: No
Admin Access Level: Nothing selected
Include Child Groups: No

I also changed those people with "Author" access back to "Registered".

This isn't ideal, but at least it allows my "test" account and the "Manager"/"Super Admin" roles to see what is needed.

I continue to be puzzled about this because I thought I was setting thing up correctly. I cannot figure out what other issues would bring this on. Oh well.

Did you remember to sync users in backend when testing with the same user? You need to purge user cache every time you change user group in Joomla or wait for kunena session time.

You know...I had thought that might be the issue, but I wasn't sure. Forgive me for being a bit not "in the know", but is this just done in the Joomla admin pages by going to "Tools" >> "Purge Expired Cache" and then clicking on the "Purge expired" button at the top right corner of the screen?

...so in short, I would:
  1. Change my "test" user from "Registered" to "Author"
  2. Sync my users using the tools in Community Builder.
  3. Purge expired cache
  4. test the forum again using the settings that @quila had provided
Does that sound right?

No, this one is in Kunena and I just added it into K1.5.8. So there's not much documentation about it. :(

Go into Kunena and Synchronize Users. You do not have to touch any settings, just run it (icon in top).

@Matias:

You are a life saver! Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. Each time I changed my "test" user to a new role ("Registered", "Author", "Manager", etc.) and then snyced my users in Kunena, it worked perfectly!!! Again, thank you so much for your help!!! :cheer:
