Unfortunately, this site is on a crappy web host which won't update PHP from 4. We're looking at moving, and this won't be an issue anymore.

Thanks for trying.

except for the several hundred things that will never be fixed in K 1.5.x and the fact that K 1.5.x is effectively end-of-life and there soon will be no support for it.

Yes, that's good to hear that you're making the adjustment. I suggest that you use K 1.6 Technical Requirements as your yardstick in choosing a better web host.

its not just that easy to upgrade as i will have to create all forums and posts that are already there. Ive tried it on a test site but neither the greek language changed nor the posts from the previous version stayed

It is relatively simple to upgrade. The "difficult" part about upgrading is not worrying about creating all the sections/categories/topics/posts that you already have. The difficult part is the preparation that you need to do beforehand.
For some people, the difficult part is making sure that their site meets the technical requirements . For some people, they are still using outdated Joomla extensions that should have been upgraded/updated/replaced/retired years ago. Some people are still using Joomla 1.0 software (even worse, some people are still running J! 1.0) ...

People need to realise that upgrading to K 1.6 means that you need to make sure that all your other Joomla extensions are as up-to-date as possible.

Many people have a lot of problems with Joomla templates, especially those templates that were developed before June 2010. But, as I mentioned earlier, the main problem that most people seem to have, is getting their sites to meet the K 1.6 Technical Requirements .

I believe the Greek language translation has been updated for K 1.6.3. The K 1.6 installation process should preserve your current forum structure and the messages in it. You might like to try that test again.
