Cerberus:

Actually avatar upload was broken, but both avatar and image upload works just fine at least in my test site (K1.5.10RC1), which will be out in few days.

K1.5.x fixes most bugs that were in FireBoard, but does not have too many new features.
K1.6.x moves forward by changing almost everything to better and by adding a few major features (including some officially supported plugins and modules)

I would like to add to some of the questions already answered (and well answered) earlier in this discussion:

N6REJ wrote:

ccboard has lastest, popular modules ... I don't see this in Kunena that is current

Some, modules that were originally developed by users, are being considered to become part of the Kunena project and will be better supported in future.

Yes, I wrote a few modules (including a "popular threads" module), as did others, which you can find by browsing through the User Contributions category or by searching specifically for something you may have in mind.

N6REJ wrote:

fireboard had a LOT of coding issues, how is kunena finally resolved this?

Fireboard had a fairly poor reputation among web based forums because of numerous design flaws, security issues and defective code. Earlier versions of Kunena have correct the more serious problems; K 1.5 allowed for the forum to be installed and run as a natively Joomla 1.5 extension (something that could never have happened with Fireboard).

Kunena 1.6 (nearing completion in the alpha development phase) builds on this foundation. K 1.6 will be even more solid and reliable than K 1.5 has become.

In the future, a new version (Kunena 2.0) will be a complete rewrite of the forum extension that will bear no relation to Fireboard and will be fully compliant with Joomla 1.6.

N6REJ wrote:

ccboard allows for JCE editor so that images/movies can be easily used. Fireboard never could do this well and I don't see so far that kunena can yet either.

There has been no opportunity to incorporate a WYSIWYG editor in Kunena. The use of a proprietary BBCode will remain for the present time; however, I understand that with K 2.0 there will be an opportunity to address this current limitation.

N6REJ wrote:

with Kunena leaning heavily towards JoomSocial what will happen to CB support and will Kunena remain free?

It is simply untrue to assert that the Kunena project has particular "leanings" towards JomSocial, Community Builder or any other community management Joomla extension. The development teams of several software projects have freely co-operated to implement the facilities within the various products necessary to integrate with them Kunena and vice versa.

This collaboration will continue and in the future and will grow to incorporate other software components.

It is fair to say that this website, www.kunena.com , currently uses JomSocial for some aspects of its website management but that (as far as I know) is the only possible "leaning" there may be towards that particular product.

I've been reading alot and am glad i've gotten so many good responses. It's nice to hear Kunena is being completely moved away from fireboard. I'm disappointed that in as long as its been since Kunena/Fireboard has been released alot of these more common things are not yet addressed.
For me the following items are "Show Stoppers"...If they are present in its current config then great Else Kunena will be unusable for me.
Ability for users to upload images directly into Kunena and display them. ( i see the link below but it doesn't seem to work for me the way i would expect)
Ability for users to "embed" video
bbcode support (seems to exist so thats good )
Article embedding (with discuss bot I understand this is doable but idk how user friendly it is

There is probably more but my mind is slipping today.
What is the timeline for 1.6 and 2.0 release @ this time? I realise its specualtive but it would give me a vague understanding.
