I think that might be a Joomla setting.

I think the question that's being asked - please correct me if I'm wrong - is "How can I change the target of links, those that are contained postings on a Kunena forum, so that they don't open in a new browser window?"
I think the answer to this, very specific, question lies somewhere in the coding of ../components/com_kunena/lib/kunena.link.class.php but, I haven't had time to experiment with making the relevant change to see what would be needed. I would expect that someone with intimate knowledge of Kunena's construction would be able to answer this question quicker and more accurately than me.
Having forum links open in a new window can often be very helpful (because it allows your users to easily switch between reading the original message and the object of link contained in it. I think Kunena was designed with this intention in mind. If you change the target, so that referenced links open within the same window, then you users will have to press the browser back/forward button (or ALT+◄ or ALT+► keyboard shortcuts) to switch back and forth. Personally, I wouldn't change the current arrangement.
As for being able to differentiate between internal and external site links (and therefore assigning their targets as, respectively, _self or _blank), I think that's out-of-scope in a Kunena context for the reasons I discussed above.

You could do it but with custom BBcode. But then again will users know how to use it? Maybe see if this is something Roland could implement in his extended BBcode.

In forum all links are external and fixing it would need all possible domains listed in the configuration + checks for them.
This is something I would like to have by myself, so stay tuned..
