Installation error message "There was an error uploading this file to the server" was created by Harpist
Hello folks,
I am new to this community and am attempting to install Kunena. When I am going through the installation I am getting the error:
There was an error uploading this file to the server.
All I have doe is download the *.tar file and then attempted to upload using the Extension Manager installer. I assume I am missing something simple. Can someone point me in the right direction?

If the .tar file fails to install (I have to confess, I've never attempted to install Joomla components using .tar files) try using a .zip version instead.
If you are new to Kunena, do not, under any circumstances, attempt to install K 1.5.0a - a pre-release test version - which is only for expert users and which is not supported.
Go to joomlacode.org/gf/project/kunena/frs/ and download the latest production release version, K 1.0.9, com_kunena_v1.0.9_b1231_2009-04-03.zip and try that. B)

Please install 1.0.9, this is the last stable version, but before that, please check if your system has the min. tech requirements:
docs.kunena.com/index.php/Technical_Requirements
If your system is sufficient, and you installed on Joomla! 1.5 than the problem may be a
30-second timeout on Joomla 1.5.x
Please read here (point 30-second timeout on Joomla 1.5.x), how you can install Kunena anyway.

Sozzled,
It is indeed version 1.09 I was installing.
Thanks for the suggestion about the zip file. The zip file did indeed load. I ran a quick check on the tar file and found I couldn't even get it to unzip. Looks like some where along the way something got corrupted.
Unfortunately, I still am having some problems. The back-end looks just find - I can go through all the component configuration. However, my front-end is just a blank screen.
It looks like all my tech-specs meet the requirements (Joomla 1.5, PHP 5, MySQL 5.1), my PHP time-out is at 180. Again any recommendation/suggestions are welcome.

At the risk of seeming obvious, are you running Joomla 1.5 in "legacy mode"? As a follow-up suggestion, when starting with Kunena, start with a fairly "standard" configuration as discussed

Hi sozzled,
No need to apologize about asking about the simple things. I appreciate all your input.
I had loaded the Legacy plugin (actually, Kunena 1.09 would not install without enabling the legacy mode). I also changed the default Kunena configuration to match the standard configuration you referenced. Still no go.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will keep plugging away.
