Are YOU going to be doing the work? If not ask your host to upgrade. It's just that simple. They either will or will not. I guess I'm not understanding your question.

Here's a question. If someone has a site running in Mysql 4.x.x and wants to upgrade to a later version of Kunena/firboard (or ANY software for that matter), but the latest version requires mysql 5.x.x is there any way at all to convert to the latest mysql before upgrading? If it is possible, what kind of mess are we talking about?

This question is off-topic; the answer depends on the software upgrade. Most software upgrades, such as Kunena, include the relevant procedures to build or transform affected database structures. These procedures may be automated within the upgrade or they may involve manual steps to be performed either before or after the upgrade; the README files usually contain the details of what's involved.

The generalised question, the way it's asked, cannot be answered here.

In addition, when a host does not satisfy the minimum requirement, the installer (using uploader) just return a blank page.

It was only when I tried to installed using the /tmp directory that I found out that my host does not comply with the minimum MYSQL requirement.

I have only a MYSQL 4.1.X on my webhost, does this mean that people like me will not be able to use Kunena?

Changing web host? I know you may ask that, nope, I have been with this host for 6 years now and I am not willing to give up a good host to comply with Kunena requirements.

Unfortunately not if your host refuses to upgrade.

Guys, you must understand that mysql 4 is being deprecated this same years, this means the devs of it aren't gonna suport it anymore, not even security fixes.

Any host that denies the petitions to upgrade to 5.0 are putting in danger their clients... so, I don't care if I had a good service for 2 months, 4 years or if it's my brother... THAT'S NOT A GOOD HOST.
