Question Ability to open a single post (or that a referenced will be at the top) by a link

I'm missing the possibility to link directly to written post.

Currently you get:
www.domain.nl/index.php/forum/category/topic#21883
or when on 2nd page:
www.domain.nl/index.php/forum/category/topic?start=20#21883

But this link is only shortly valid, because when posts increase it doesn't work anymore.
So i prefer a solution so the link will be available and working for allways.

Something like:

www.domain.nl/index.php/forum/category/topic?showfrom=21883

I understand i can hack the forum and build it my self, but i prefer solutions that are available by default. I already hacked the forum to get an autorefresh in topics when posts are added, so users don't need to refresh manually.

Arno

Hi, Arno

The link stays availible when there are more pages, so you don't need to hack anything. because the #number is the message id, so that will be always the same.

Thank you for your reply

Well it doesn't work

When i now post a post in a topic i can refer to it by
www.domain.nl/index.php/forum/category/topic#21883

A few posts later this post is on the next page, so i can only refer to it by (i have set 20 posts per page)
www.domain.nl/index.php/forum/category/topic?start=20#21883

What i'm missing that you say it should work?

Regards,
Arno

1) First start using sef. You need to rename the htaccess.txt file to .htaccess
And enable sef options on the global joomla configuration

2) then you have the correct names, see our forum as a demo.

What has SEF to do with this?

May be you didn't understand my question/problem:

If i add a post X, i can link to the post by:
www.domain.nl/index.php/forum/category/topic#messageid

When other posts are added and my post X is still on the first page i can still link to it by:
www.domain.nl/index.php/forum/category/topic#messageid

Meanwhile more posts are added and my post X is shifted to the 2nd page, then this link doesn't work anymore:
www.domain.nl/index.php/forum/category/topic#messageid
and then the link should be:
www.domain.nl/index.php/forum/category/topic?start=20#messageid

So i want a link to a messageid that works always undepended on what page it will be.

It seems you have message ordering Newest Post First. I've tested it and you're right. If the post is shifted to the next page, then this link doesn't work anymore:

Yes, i use message ordering with "Newest Post First"

The other way is very annoying in a very active forum.

unfortunately there is no way todo that, because you need the page filter.

I agree with 810 and, in fact, I do not think I have seen this feature in any online discussion forum that I have used over the last 20+ years.
