There seem to be a few different threads with no clear answer or identification of the problem originating from this specific upgrade path...

Today I upgraded from v3.0 to 3.01 and Gravatars no longer render.
Place holder images also do not render. No other changes have been made to the site.

I tried disabling and re-enabling the Gravatar plugin, no joy.
The Jomsocial images render when it is enabled.

A little digging sheds some light .. the Gravatar icon is calling to the following URL:

www.gravatar.com/avatar.php?gravatar_id=

It should, however, be calling to

" s.gravatar.com/ ..."

If anyone can direct where to change this it might solve the issue.

Many thanks,
Mark

[Update]
It appears Gravatar is now forwarding the 'www' prefix and avatars are rendering. As many understand this DNS may or may not be a permanent forward.
