Just for the record: The forums themselves show the topics, so they are there actually.

I have the impression that the contents of the database are not being read.
I once had a similar problem, where the prefixes of the tables were too long and after I reduced the characters from six to four, the table contents were displayed.
Maybe try reducing the prefix in a test environment.

@Pinkeltje yes I did make the diagnosis and all tests have passed positive (working, green)

@Gindi, how would I do that without breaking the whole system? With some help I can try that and find out, if that's the cause of the issue.

If phpMyAdmin is installed, load the database, scroll down and click on "Select all". Next to it, in the "Marked:" field, select "Replace table prefix" under prefix. In the Change table prefix window, enter the old prefix under "From" and enter the new prefix under "To". Click OK and wait until the message that the prefix has been changed appears.
Enter the new prefix in the Joomla configuration under Server - Database - Prefix.

Okay, thanks for the step-by-step tutorial. Tried exactly that without any success. My table prefix has been "mm4_" instead of the longer name but still the topics were not displayed.

What I tested and found out though yet again:

Writing a new topic makes this one at least appear for a while in the "My Topics" overview. After a certain while it's gone though and the list is empty again.
