It seams that it is impossible to move a newly added sub-category to a new place upwards in the listing and secondly what trickers the "X" to a checkmark.

You can drag them with your mouse to the right position just like you do with articles and menu-items.
Which X? Check column header first.what trickers the "X" to a checkmark.

the point is that I can not drag to another position; have you tested this before your answer?
The column I am referring to is not adjustable; the heading is "Gesloten" ("Closed")
Is it so that if there are no articles in a category that it gives a checkmark?

The x means the category is open for posting. If you click it, it turns to a checkmark which means the category is closed.
And yes I have tested dragging so it should work.

I confirm this error. It is not possible to move a category to another section with this function. It only works within a section.
I will add it to the bug list.
But you can still move the categories. Click on this category and select the section you want to move it to as the parent area (see image).

Rich,
I have tried several times to move a newly added subcategory (--RC Controleer gegevens) alphabatically into its own section.
Clicking on a line , or the three dots, does not work.
Is there a way to alter this directly in the database?
