Following is my workaround for this.
I'm running apache on 64 bit Ubuntu
Once Kunena is installed/upgraded reverse the changes and restart Apache
As an aside, it would be great if the developers could fix this

- Edit the file /etc/modsecurity/modsecurity.conf
- Comment out the two lines starting with SecRule MULTIPART_UNMATCHED_BOUNDARY "[email protected] 0" \
"id:'200003',phase:2,t:none,log,deny,msg:'Multipart parser detected a possible unmatched boundary.'" - Restart Apache

I don't provide support by PM, because this can be useful for someone else.

so for Kunena to install, security on entire server needs disabled now?
As the OP mentioned, no other joomla component requires this and it's hard to believe such a wonderful (previously stable) component would require such a thing.
Are there plans for a stable build of Kunena to work normally (install normally) with any version of Joomla?
