Kunena 7.0.4 Released

The Kunena team has announce the arrival of Kunena 7.0.4 [K 7.0.4] in stable which is now available for download as a native Joomla extension for J! 5.4.x/6.0.x. This version addresses most of the issues that were discovered in K 6.2 / K 6.3 / K 6.4 and issues discovered during the last development stages of K 7.0

If you are having problems then, for your own benefit, it would save us all a lot of time if you would kindly post your configuration report when you ask for help from this forum. If you do not post your configuration report we will not ask you for it but you will probably not get your problem solved, either.

Question SEO concern: have I set this properly?

Replied by sozzled on topic "Indexing" of the forum

willtrd wrote: i would prefer to have the forum indexed because it would help seo due to a lot of content posted regularly so if there is a way i can achieve that without any negative impact i would prefer that.

I am still unsure what you mean by having the forum "indexed". As I mentioned before, this seems off-topic to the original question which is about whether you have set things up properly.

willtrd wrote: i have tried to go into the joomla menu's (forum, index, recent topics etc....) and add in the meta data & keywords but they do not show up in my page source so apparently it is not working for some reason?

As I also mentioned earlier, we have had many discussions about this subject. Again could be wrong but, as far as I know, there is no means to add metadata and "keywords" to Kunena. The page descriptions used by the big search engines (e.g. Bing, Google) are automatically extracted when your website is crawled. As an example of this, why not try searching Google now for this topic (e.g. www.google.com.au/#q=kunena+forum+seo+co...is+properly&safe=off ) and look at the number one result from that search.

As I mentioned earlier, there are many topics in this forum relating to people's concerns about how to add extra META information . I don't believe it's possible.

For those who put their faith and confidence in 3rd-party SEO tools, I think the jury is split 20% in favour of those who think they're useful and 80% who think they're more trouble than Little Bo Peep had trying to manage her sheep. But, again, that's just my personal opinion.

sozzled wrote: How did you do this? What tools, if any, did you use to "go through" (analyse, perhaps?) the pages?

i just went to each individual page & reviewd the source of that page.
example: site url / right click / page source / see entire code

sozzled wrote: Perhaps you can help me understand the specific problem here. What are the clues that suggest to you that problems may arise down the track?

google & most all search engines will penalize you for duplicate meta tags & keyword stuffing. so if the forum pages are appearing to be duplicate meta information the search engines will see this as a negative & penalize our entire domain knocking ranking down.

my goal is to not let that happen. a very important note is that i have edited the meta description & keywords for the "index" menu item, therefor it should use that information for seo purposes just like any other article or menu item would. however it does not use it at all & is as if i never made any changes to it at all.
here is the actual source of the index page of the forum:
<head>
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
<meta name="keywords" content="Categories">
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow">
<meta name="description" content="Categories - Forum - English (United Kingdom)">
<meta name="generator" content="Joomla! - Open Source Content Management">
<title>Forum :: Category Index</title>

however in my joomla back end i have a completely different description, keywords & title so i dont know why they are not working. all other pages, articles, menu items etc.... work perfectly so why not the kuena menu items? if i could get them to work it would cut down on the duplicates at least for the main category pages.

now please see the following pages source: (the keywords are identical, of course i changed them in the below but they are the same because they are all using my global joomla configuration keywords.

New Topic:
<head>
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
<meta name="keywords" content="mykeyword,mykeyword,mykeyword,mykeyword,
mykeyword,mykeyword,mykeyword">
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow">
<meta name="description" content="Recent Discussions (1/1) - Forum - English (United Kingdom)">
<meta name="generator" content="Joomla! - Open Source Content Management">
<title>Forum :: Recent Discussions (1/1)</title>

What may be more useful, instead of trying to analyse your site, is for you to look at the pages here on this site ( www.kunena.org ) and see how things are done here. As far as we are aware, there is no penalisng effect from Google on this site as far as what they index in their search engine.

You can see the effect of what Google does with the pages on this site (and the ranking of th domain) if you search Google for this topic (as I showed in msg #7 of this topic). I cannot be certain that your site will be treated in the same way as this site is concerned but I can assure you that we are using "vanilla-flavoured" Joomla SEO to achieve the results.

oh yes, i didn't mean anything negative or that you were not using with good intensions. sometimes components do things to sites that are different from others & i have heard a lot about forums doing this. please dont take this as anything negative!
could you please address the meta information in the kuena menus? with the information being input into each menu item why would it not show on the page?
thank you

No offence taken. I was only stating a few simple facts. B)

We do not do anything special here. We do not attempt to add "meta information" to Joomla menus.

willtrd wrote: i have heard a lot about forums doing this.

I don't spend much time following the commentary and I don't know beans about "other" forums. :lol:

willtrd wrote: could you please address the meta information in the kuena menus?

How would you like me to do that? As I have mentioned several times in this topic, a few people have complained about the lack of means to enter meta information (and have it "take root") as far as Kunena is concerned. I think you will agree that there's been much complaining (perhaps with the expectation that the Kunena team will consider this a top priority) but not much movement. The Kunena team is currently focused on developing K 3.1—overhauling the look and feel of Kunena—but there are no current plans to extend current functionality in the SEO arena.

There is no company behind Kunena; everyone who contributes to Kunena is a hobbyist, enthusiast or professional web developer who gives their time freely to this project - volunteers every one of us. Our hope is to make Kunena the most reliable, scalable, durable and robust forum component for Joomla that we can make it and to give people the best solution to meeting their forum needs. The forum is a self-help community-driven resource for users to help one another. Our job, in moderating the forum, is not necessarily to answer every question but, rather, to point people in the right direction where they can find the answers.

What would be ideal is for someone who has true skill—instead of rank amateurs like me—to come forward and volunteer to work with the team to resolve all of these issues. The problem is that the Kunena team is small and hugely overworked; I'm busy, you're busy, we're all busy. I'm sorry that I may not be able to help you better.

i understand. i didnt realize that there was no support team behind the kuena forum. i think it would be most adviseable to charge a small fee for "professional" members so they can offer support. time is valueable however a product without support, well doesnt make much sense from a professional standpoint.
HOWEVER i think it is absolutely amazing that people such as your self & the team are willing to put in the work for free for all others:)
there is only one other thing that i would like to get figured out & i will no longer be posting much on the forum for support as i will figure it out in time.
1. my kuena tabs keep disappearing (any idea why?)
2. i am not receiving any notifications when people post on the forum (i have set myself as a moderator for all categories in the kuena backend)

if you would prefer i post this elsewhere will be happy to do so. if you could be so kind as to offer you opinion/expertise on this i would be greatful.
