I performed the changes to the admin language for subscribed topics and moderations emails.

I created an override for 'A new reply has been posted on the' to 'SUBSCRIBED TOPIC: A new reply has been posted on the'

and an override for 'A new post has been made to a category to which you have assigned as moderator on the' to 'MODERATION REQUIRED: A new post has been made to a category to which you have assigned as moderator on the'

but I'm not seeing the changes in the actual emails, it's still saying the default messages.

Any ideas?

Open (edit) your override. Mark the option "For both locations" and save it.

Important! Always create a backup before you make any changes to your website!

Thanks that worked. What does it mean by both locations?

Go with the mouse over the text "For both locations" and you see it.

Quote:

If this box is checked the override will be stored for both administrator (Backend) and site (Frontend). This is essential for creating language overrides for some plugins because their language files, while stored in backend, are also used in frontend (example: plg_content_vote).
Please note that the two overrides will be completely independent from each other after storing them.
