Kunena 7.0.5 & Kunena 6.4.11 – Security Updates Released

The Kunena team has announce the arrival of Kunena 7.0.5 [K 7.0.5] in stable which is now available for download as a native Joomla extension for J! 5.4.x/6.0.x. This version addresses most of the issues that were discovered in K 6.2 / K 6.3 / K 6.4 and issues discovered during the last development stages of K 7.0.

The Kunena team is also pleased to announce the eleventh version of Kunena 6.4, a native Joomla extension for Joomla! 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4 and 6.0.

It is painfully obvious that people are not reading or totally disregarding the warning that K1.5 is in alpha status and should not be used for anything other than bug testing on NON PRODUCTION sites. I suggest that it be removed for download until as such time as it is ready for public consumption. A great deal of the support questions coming in are users wanting support for it when there is none available. The moderators are having to repeat themselves unnecessarily to reinforce this. The disclaimer is obviously not effective.

I agree, gm. I stated as much in Never again publicly release alpha test version . If the development team don't have an army of alpha test users by now, they never will.

Alpha test versions must be quarantined from the general public. To allow the general public to abscond with unproven, untried and (I'm sorry to say) defect-prone software, and to then expect support, is an recipe for disaster.

However there's one important additional point that I feel it's necessary to make. We cannot continue to expect naïve, inexperienced users who inadvertently downloaded K 1.5.0a to be able to undo the mess they've gotten themselves into. We cannot continue to write - you and I, gm, that is - "if you got yourselves into this mess, you have to get yourselves out of it again."

K 1.5.0a makes a few changes to the SQL tables. Uninstalling K 1.5.0a doesn't necessarily mean that you can successfully install K 1.0.9 later. What is needed here is a definitive, unambiguous and easy-to-follow uninstall procedure for the poor victims of the K 1.5.0a experience. We're lacking that.

I think the development team has done a fantasic job. I think that K 1.5.0 will be an excellent product and I commend the developers for the tireless work they've put into it. Unfortunately, I think that the public release of K 1.5.0a was unwise and it was a grave mistake. I also believe, and I feel very strongly about this, that in future alpha test releases should be strictly controlled so as to no end up with the current situation we're in.

:)

I'm not here to rehash whether it was a mistake or not. Hindsight is 20/20. All I'm suggesting at this point is to no longer have it available to the general public.

I agree with you, again, gm. I would like to not rehash the "mistake" aspect, however there has been an equally strenuous denial from (some of?) the developers that the strategy was flawed to begin with. The body of evidence suggests otherwise. I was merely making a passing observation. B)

Previous attempts to prominently display the disclaimer information failed. In fact, at the moment there is no prominent display on the site (and by prominent, I mean "in your face") about how K 1.5.0a is to be used.

It's not merely a matter of stating that we always have perfect 20/20 hindsight! However it is a case of acknowledging the problem, learning from the experience, correcting it, and making sure that it doesn't happen again! The aknowledgement doesn't have to be done in public, but then again neither should a public denial of the problem be done either. ;)

In short, let's remove the ability to download K 1.5.0a. :)

As 1.5.0a no longer server any purpose (most of the bugs have been fixed already), development team decided to remove it from public downloads. There will soon be a new version: 1.5.1 beta that should be much more stable. We need to decide what to do with it, but it already contains some bug fixes which haven't yet been fixed in our next stable release: 1.0.10.

I would like to correct one misinformation: Kunena 1.5.0 and Kunena 1.0.9 are almost identical. It was mainly a huge search and replace project where we tried to locate all Joomla 1.5 Legacy functions and replace them with Native one. There are no new features in Kunena 1.5 and no database tables have been changed. There may be some bugs that cause downgrading to fail, but many of the bugs seen after downgrade have been real bugs in Kunena 1.0.9.
