I get an older version of translation, fix some words, and put new strings.

Yes, it's possible, but not in translation.
Go in the Configuration of the Forum, after it's instaled.
Look for 'Ranks' definition. Give the name what you want for every rank, and also defines a new one!

Have you been able to generate language files for 1.6 based on this translation? It would be a good starting point for translation.

With .ini files for Kunena, it is now possible to use the Translation Manager component for Joomla. That helps the translation a lot.

I have translated all the language files in Kunena 1.6 RC2 to Portuguese-Portugal pt-PT including, frontend, administraion, template and instalation. I am testing it with some friend on a client website closed to public in order to correct some mistakes. I think in the end of September it will be ready to share in Kunena Forum. This time delay is due to professional issues. As soon we review it as soon we will share it.
